#376 Re: Main Forum » Bruteforcing too easy, a proposal » 2014-01-31 10:31:34

This is a great solution. It would still allow tools to be used for robberies in a reasonable fashion, but make pure brute force cost-prohibitive. However, I'm worried that this would make the rich invincible. With traps that are as ridiculous as some of the ones we have, how could you break them without either a full map or a crazy amount of tools?

Also, just clarifying: These increased prices would only apply per tool, right? e.g If I already bought 5 saws, would buying one ladder cost any more than normal? And how would all of this affect the resale price?

#377 Re: Main Forum » Too much money in the game? » 2014-01-31 08:54:08

The problem is the influx of new players who don't really know what they're doing. All their money is simply flowing to the rich veterans, and then sitting there behind good traps until they're brute forced by other vets.

WHAAAAAAT? I'm scared now - people can literally buy enough tools to cut to ANYTHING, ANYWHERE on the map. Nobody is safe... but I guess that's the point. It always sucks to have your trap brute forced, but it's a major part of the game; as Jason said, it's not a puzzle game, and thus, it's not the robber's responsibility to solve your traps if they don't have to.

With some clever traps and some other less-clever ones, my house increased by almost $150K last night. Of course, I was also robbed pretty quickly by somebody with lots of tools... I wish I has more time to bask in the glory of wealth! I rebuilt and self tested, but forgot to replace a dead cat (oops) and died. It's a pretty good example of how a dog-based commit gate plus a really simple fake-out trap can kill so many people. That part of the trap easily got over 90 and my 110 or so so kills with that house; the combination lock later couldn't hold a candle to the success of such a simple death trap.

Edit: Here's the design. I'll do a more in-depth description later. http://castledraft.com/editor/7odwJC

#380 Re: Main Forum » Random Discussion » 2014-01-29 21:21:04

I rarely succeed in chain robbing. I'll normally reach about $15,000 - $25,000 houses before either dying or giving up. I find it much more satisfying to build evil deathtraps, which I then,in a sort of sociopathic way, assign names. In my current house, many have made it past the Doggy Door of Death, and some even through the Inexplicable Inverter (not really very inexplicable at all), but nobody has finished the house by solving the Catbination Lock (tm) and thus making their way through the Inexplicabeler Non-Inverter safely.

#381 Re: Main Forum » Clocks! » 2014-01-29 20:59:26

I hope to be able to use a clock plus a bit storage device to allow the robber to enter a sequence of powered states which would then be looped through, forever, in that order. It would require a massive amount of electronics, though... I might have to use a cat and some sticky switches to encode the input instead of actual bits, just to make it all fit. Would that be cheating? I really just want to try to get such a crazy record-player idea like that into a house.

#382 Re: Main Forum » Lucky Escapes » 2014-01-28 16:37:40

I was working on revising my house, and, on my final self test, took one step too many down a passage and saw the electric floors down the passage I needed to go light up. I knew that I would die, because their was an angry pit bull waiting by the entrance. I ended up deciding that, as I would die anyway, I would try a leap of faith onto the floors, hoping beyond hope that I had accidentally used a non-sticking switch. I stepped forward, my hard shaking as I pressed the key. And... the floors turned off. I was through.

I proceeded with the rest of my trap only to realize that the pits at the end were disconnected to the power source they were intended for due to an error, and I was locked in. Again, I tried another crazy, hail mary maneuver to get back. My plan was to kill the pit bull waiting at the entrance with electric floors from that first trap. It would have worked... but because of the way I circumvented the previous trap, I was greeted with a snarling and completely alive pit bull on my way to the door. Goodbye, me. You didn't have anything to live for, anyway.

I disagree. They are not just a bunch of NPC pixels. They are someone's bunch of NPC pixels. Julius Dwayne Palacios killing my family made me sad. Iceman felt regret after killing someone else's pixelated family. Those are real feelings we're talking about, pixelated presentation notwithstanding.

Michalk, I think you're completely correct about that. The fact that you are taking something tangible away from somebody else, especially something that you have as well and which can be taken from you in the same gruesome manner, is what causes regret. I really feel guilty after killing somebody's wife because that person no longer has a wife; I took her away from them via my murder. And the exact same thing could happen to me as well.

I hate to be "that guy" talking about all this, but I really had hoped to get a painting out of this contest... instead I died and got a whole lot of nothing. I was wondering if Jason would tell us where he is getting the paintings from so we can buy our own if we want to. That would be really great; even though it wouldn't be a "real" contest painting, it would still be a cool thing to have.

Yeah, feel free to do so.

The god follows you, two steps behind you, and lets you pass the trap.

Edit: You know, I meant to say "dog", but that turned out so perfectly that I don't want to change it.

I completely agree. In the last 5 minutes I racked up 10 deaths in top houses. I think that resetting the timers would help rebalance everything after the contest, or else all top houses would have immunity from most people for a day.

I hope that, now that the contest's over, we can see some of the winning designs!

Yeah, I did, and that's really all that matters. Anyway, I still hope to buy my own painting, after auctioning off my old french horn on eBay; I'm assuming the paintings cost under $500 apiece, right?

#390 Re: Main Forum » The Contest » 2014-01-27 18:02:57

Welp. I died repeatedly in a last minute robbing spree, and ended up with nothing. Yay.

You may have been one of the people who took ages robbing me! To be frank, that was the worst thing about my design: it was so big, with so many passages, that many people took over 500 steps robbing it. I've even seen one guy who nearly had 2000 steps! He died. tongue

I died like an idiot again, and lost any chance I even remotely had at winning the contest. So I figured I'd post my house design for all to admire! I think a new thread of house designs would be great at educating the influx of new players that are going to come in from Steam and don't know how to build houses as well as us veterans. So feel free to post designs here!

Here is the design: http://castledraft.com/editor/mLJump

The trap is broken up into four parts. The first and largest is situated at the bottom: A player who enters, loses track of where they came from, and sees a dog is forced to make a choice upon an attempt to flee; they often choose wrong and die in an empty hallway. The proper way to solve this is to first get the left dog to chase you (disregarding the dog directly in front of the wife, which is not part of the trap), and to then proceed right. Upon reaching the far right wall, you can head up and use the dogs to press the buttons behind you, allowing you to cross the electric floor and pit and reach the second trap.

The second trap utilizes screen scrolling to its advantage. Stepping more than one square past the trapdoor cause the screen to scroll and bring the pit bull into view, closing the powered door and activating electric floors behind it, thus locking the player in with the angry dog and no way back - the return route is blocked by an electric floor and another pit bull. This trap can be completed by simply hugging the bottom wall and exiting the room via the powered door.

The third trap is the set of four corridors. Going up any of the first three locks you in with a dog, along with breaking the fourth trap. Even if the robber escapes their doggy doom, they have to go through electric floors and then cut through the fourth trap as well, only to be greeted with a safe blocked by pits and no way back. This trap is simple enough to get through; ignore all passages going up and continue on. This trap is just a way to kill off three fourths of the people who get this far - which was only one guy.

The fourth and final trap is a basic magic dance. The combination is simple, take one step back after your third step up, then continue upwards. However, if bypassing this is attempted, by cutting the electric floors, it prevents the final pits from activating when the pit bull steps on the sticky button - again preventing the robber from reaching my safe and forcing him to die, as he can no longer leave.

This is one of my favorite designs, and in its three iterations over three different lives and nearly a week, only one guy reached the vault, and due only to the design not being fully complete (I was missing lots of walls - many were wooden and 1-think). I would recommend it as a good design to get kills, especially those with higher bounties. Many people don't realize that they're walking into a trap, then find themselves unable to leave. The main disadvantage is wife protection; she can only get her gun and a couple pit bulls.

Anyone else have designs to share?

I can't believe I didn't think of that. And I think I have a source of about $25 coming up soon via paypal which might finance a second account, as long as I don't die horribly. wink

Edit: So, I died like an idiot. Doing repairs and forgot that steel walls don't conduct.

#395 Re: Main Forum » Fitt's Law » 2014-01-27 14:35:34

I've heard of this a long time ago, but as I don't really work with that kind of stuff I sort of forgot the implications. May I propose a Blip's Law?

The amount of time we're willing to search for $2000, 0, 0 houses is directly proportional to our amount of free time by a constant k such that:
S=Tk, where S is the amount of time spent searching, T is the amount of free time, and k is a constant.

It can be easily proven that k = 1. tongue

#396 Re: Main Forum » Meta-Game and Common Trap Mechanics » 2014-01-27 14:22:18

Yup, that's my place! I've gotten many, many kills with that trap, including one with a $22,000 bounty on his head. It pays to be careful when scouting, guys!

#397 Re: Main Forum » Wacky Deaths » 2014-01-27 14:20:28

I have had multiple people stand on a powered pit and fry an electric floor supplying power to said pit. They had no way to survive anyway... but really? Come on, that's just too stupid.

Thanks to a certain Mr. Finn, who just gave me new chances in the contest with a nice $25,000 "donation". Sorry about the pit bull to the face, but you fell into my trap so perfectly that you deserved it!

If you're experienced, that one is way too scary. If I see a door, I'm out. No questions. At a minimum, I'd have to spend about $500 to saw through and put the dog behind the door to sleep and that's a large up front investment.
Something to keep in mind is that it's sometimes more profitable to make a seemingly safe entrance. Make people feel comfortable. You don't want everyone taking 3 steps.

Well, the pit bull behind a door trap has been used for a long time, probably since v5, but I've just now seen it get a large surge in popularity, and I'm not sure why. But I agree with jere; I never go past an activated powered door unless I'm on a suicide mission.

My favorite trap is, to put in in vague terms: a bunch of hallways to return by, but only one is the same one you entered through. Dogs happen to make this trap both successful and absolutely hilarious to watch people die in.

#400 Re: Main Forum » Meta-Game and Common Trap Mechanics » 2014-01-27 12:38:39

One that's become very common nowadays is having a closed door near the entrance and a later part of the trap open the door. Behind the door was a pit bull, which prevents leaving unless you have a gun or dealt with it beforehand.
