There has to be a part 4 because I see nothing about the diabolical 512 step clock that made so many believe they were trapped; however, although created by a mad scientist, Harris saw right through it with a stroke of brilliance.  Mr. Brit honestly never expected anybody to figure it out so easily.  Sadly for Mr. Brit, it was the only thing he had left in life.  Determined to end it all, he hung himself in the cat room next where the rest of his family and so many others met their fate.

Scott and Brit are going to the main focus of the next part. I really loved your trap, so I'll definitely be describing it in detail. Also, your cash was what funded the final additions to the Harris house.
I think that this story will probably be 5 or 6 parts total, plus an epilogue. I'll also be doing a full house breakdown in a different thread.

For multiple hours? I haven't seen you on the list since yesterday!

Did you die in self-test or something? I can't seem to find you on the list.

It's probably reverse chills, a.k.a. force-ignore. If you successfully rob somebody, then they die, you can't see their house at all until 24 hours after the successful robbery took place. It's designed to prevent farming an alt by just robbing your own 2k houses over and over again, but can cause some strange behavior like what you're seeing here.

#130 Re: Main Forum » Can someone explain this to me? » 2014-04-13 13:01:19

Something like this would work - the robber has to guess right or get locked out: http://castledraft.com/editor/5hjjvn

I've also hooked this type of cat-door trap up to a magic dance, such that if the dance was entered correctly, doors shut so that the robber can't see the cat; otherwise, they get locked out of the trap.

#131 Re: Main Forum » House reset? » 2014-04-13 10:54:27

My best guess is that your internet went out 5 minutes before you got the "left your house due to inactivity" message. Normally, your client pings the server occasionally to make sure you aren't idling in your house, but if your internet goes off, it can't ping the server and the server assumes that you've been inactive.

#132 Re: Main Forum » House visit count and death count reset? » 2014-04-13 10:43:40

Changing your house and completing a new self-test resets the death count.
So Shelton probably knows that his house is worth about $2000, and just keeps removing and replacing a wall then re-validating his house to reset it to $2000, 0, 0.

#133 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-13 10:04:34

I got Kane and Geyer, but somebody grabbed Geyer's painting from my empty vault.

I put Kane's art back to auction.

#134 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-13 09:46:10

Firstly, MMaster, I would like to apologize for losing your $100k fortune in self test. Also, a simple tip: always make sure to kill cats after they've been used.

As for your magic dance, I'd really like to see why the wiring takes up so much space. Is it really necessary to use that big of an area in your house for something that can be cracked with 15-ish wire cutters?

#135 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-13 09:17:53

Ham, where's your house gone? I don't see it on the list...

Also, Scott: why won't you die already? At least change your final trap...

#136 Re: Main Forum » The Life and Times of Christopher Alvin Harris (With Part 5!) » 2014-04-13 09:13:16

This next bit covers some petty robbery, one big score, and then the fateful story of Mr. Hamblin, an experience that transforms Harris entirely.

Part 3: Fortress of Solitude

3/25/14 - I decided to take a shot at robbing my next door neighbor. I would to take a quick peek in his house, then go back to grab any tools I would need. His door was, conveniently, unlocked, just as everybody else's must be. Inside was a horrific sight. Directly in front of the doormat lay his family, brutally clubbed to death. His wife had been searched, her money taken. Worse was the children - they were killed for nothing. And the exact same thing could happen to my kids. I wouldn't let that happen, and so I needed money. The only way I could support my family was by robbing.
This guy's house (I honestly can't remember his name) was really simple. There were some pit-bulls behind door, and some electric floors, and a button. The problem was that the button was totally avoidable, and I could saunter my was right to his vault.
My next neighbor's place wasn't much better. He had one of those two-corridor electric floor traps, where two Chihuahuas follow you and you have to choose up or down. The windows keeping the Chihuahuas back were broken, however, and so grabbing the cash was merely a question of setting up the buttons properly beforehand and then crossing to the vault. He had no family. I assumed that they were already dead.

When I returned home, there was a newspaper on my doorstep. The front page cover story told of how David Michael Scott had been robbed, and showed a picture of his house. The entire back half was made up of powered doors - an incredibly expensive setup, but one that probably would function as a very good trap.
Back at my place, I made some small upgrades, then began to plan some bigger robberies. There was a Mr. Jones with about $10k who lived nearby, so I figured that I would give his place a shot. It looked like a relatively docile home at first, but soon, after an attempt to guess a combination lock, I was confronted by a swarm of pit-bulls. I managed to get out with my life, and began plotting a true heist of Jones's place. I would go in with boatloads of drugged meat, and then saws to cut around the dog room. Behind there I would bring a ladder in case of a pit. I also carried one gun, just in case.
The heist went perfectly, and I landed myself a nice $10,000, all of Jones's money. From that, I assumed that I had found another bachelor - or widower. That night, I made sure to go over emergency procedures with the family, focusing especially on what to do when a robber comes in. I hope they remember it well.

3/28/14 - I made about 10k in bounties last night, so I figured it was for an upgrade. I'm hoped to put some more traps in front of my cash, and some more pit-bulls in front of my family. I hoped those weren't mutually exclusive. Turns out that they way I designed things, they were. Traci says it's fine though, and I'm trusting her.

Here's the new place:
fTJtJzk.png

Anyways, I've been getting a lot more scouting, and some people seem to know the way through my first trap by now. The second one seems to stump them for the most part. What I've really been most worried about aren't the 2k scouts, but a certain Mr. Hamblin, who certainly seems interested in my place.

3/30/14 - They're dead! Hamblin killed all of them! The monster clubbed my family one by one. He is a cold-hearted killer who deserves every evil this world can provide. I can guarantee one thing - I will get my revenge.

3/31/14 - Last night I did the deed. By my hand, Hambin's family has suffered the same fate as mine - but they deserved it. I'm innocent, not a murderer, but he... he deserved no family at all. I am in the right here, and he is in the wrong. The innocent will always get their revenge.

I bought a painting today. It's called "Dermatillomainian Abyss". I guess it's my only company in this cruel world.

Police Report: 3-30-14, Report of Murder:
Three people were killed by Mr. Hamblin. One was shot, and two were clubbed.

Police Report: 3-31-14, Report of Murder:
Three people were killed by Mr. Harris. One was shot, and two were clubbed.

I was wondering- someone (I think Blip?) mentioned that he found out the solution to my front porch after fooling around in his own house.  How far did you find out?

I actually didn't scout that far into your place, but my handwritten notes were accurate, for the most part. I assumed that either the vault was up top or that it contained a button to make the bottom traps work. I also made an accurate guess about the location of the vault in the bottom right (ish). However, I expected the electric floor hallway at the bottom to zigzag a bunch, up and down through the area where the electronics were. I really didn't expect there to be that much electronics for a trap with just a few electric floors.

It's a really cool house idea, though I'm not sure how practical it is exactly, especially your complex psych trap. When I brute-force houses while I myself have a house, i.e. not chain robbing, I refuse to step on any tiles that could kill me (even deactivated electric floors - of course, I did once, but that was by accident). In your place, I would just wire-cutter and water over most of the cleverly set up trap, making all that wiring just a big wooden waste of space.

#139 Re: Main Forum » First $600 bounty in ages » 2014-04-12 16:50:22

Well, he did show up and just start talking about alts... again.

Back to the original topic: I actually had something very weird happen two weeks ago, once Harris got rich; I got a $200 bounty! That means that somebody who had been alive since before bounties had been made $100 had come and died in my house. I was pretty surprised to see that.

#140 Re: Main Forum » Come brute foprce my house! » 2014-04-12 16:47:16

Is there more to that house other than a magic dance? It seems that you had nearly no security against brute-forcing with that place...
If people really took you up on your offer, and tried to really brute-force that house, it would be a piece of cake. I've spent upwards of 20k brute-forcing top-tier houses before, and your place would only cost a few thousand to break - and using only wire cutters and waters, tools that the rich usually have boatloads of.

My advice: use multiple, modularized traps to protect your vault, especially focusing on counter-force and psychological traps. Those two types of traps can deter and kill well-tools robbers far better than any magic dance or combo lock could ever do. Magic dances should always be leaps of faith, and cutting through them should prevent that leap. Here, you have your vault behind a single dance and what seems like a choose-a-hallway trap; both are easy to cut though and hard to mess up on if you have the tools.

Lord0fHam wrote:

also blip, were you scouting or did you just guess where to go?

I had my plans to cut up through those wired wooden walls seared into my mind when Harris died, along with every other part of your trap that I had seen. As for blowing through the concrete, I just saw that it was one wall thick at a point, at took the opportunity.

Honestly, I should have just suicided and put those paintings up for auction.

Also, its incredibly frustrating to know that Harris died because I wanted to brick a door that had nothing behind it!

Edit: Wait, are you off the list right now?

#143 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-12 14:55:18

I know I took down Lord0fHam (aka Mr. Buckley), as revenge for the death of Harris. I'm glad that he's finally fallen after his house killed such a great man.

That was me. I was on a chain-robbing spree and meant to enter the house directly below you on the list, as the tools I had would have been effective against it (I think). I accidentally clicked on your place, and figured why not give your house a shot. I had no house, and was going to lose the tools anyways.

Well, Weaver was just robbed by Steven Leon Seaman.  He did a good job exploiting what I knew was my biggest weakness in one robbery, and I'm pretty sure it saved his life (twice) in the next, when he actually reached the vault.  Either that, or he is just a really, really cautious robber normally.  He was the only non-suicide robber, so I'm going to "borrow" some money from a neighbor or two to see how my house stands up to other people (or, more than likely, the same one).

I really enjoyed the fake vault location, as well as the double doors into single door dog, that'd kill a lot of careless people.

As for 'saving my life', you mean all the paradox circuits? I have to waste some tools to make sure I wasn't killed by any, really tricky house.

Thanks!  You definitely did a good job- I tried to design my house to punish you for being the least bit careless, and you managed to survive wink But yes, that's what I'm talking about.  I actually feel really proud about that trap, and I still wonder if it will be as effective as I hoped (as long as I keep people from seeing what you saw in the first robbery).

Aaaaaaaaaaand I just killed myself for being an idiot sad "No, Iceman, of *course* you can make it through the house without changing anything. There's no need to check first- just go right past that working commit gate, ok?"  I don't think I'm going to rebuild this house, as much as I loved certain parts of it sad

Are you going to post your design? I'd be interested to see how it looks!

By the way, there have been a couple painting owners who have lost their paintings. I was chain robbing the top pages today and hit some of them along the way.

#146 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-12 12:17:53

Yeah, it was Ortego. His house was mostly 2 combo locks that has combinations of 2,4 and 1,3 respectively.

#147 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-12 11:32:32

I seem to have suddenly started to suck at this game. I robbed somebody from the top of the list (name started with an O) on a really lucky robbery, then died in self-test again to a stray cat from an earlier part of the trap running amok in a later trap, putting like 10 paintings to auction. Building used to be my thing, but now I seem to be dying in self-tests constantly!

I may stop trying to build and just try to wipe as much of the list as I can in a series of daring 2k robberies. Because frankly, I'm out of good house ideas; the one I just died with was just a worse version of some of the traps from the Harris house combined with the cat-trap from the end of Blood Blossom. I'm having trouble coming up with anything new.

#148 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-12 11:03:20

Wallace has been robbed as well. big_smile

#149 Re: Main Forum » The Painting Directory » 2014-04-12 10:23:10

I just robbed Reed, for anybody interested.

Now I need to come up with a house design.

#150 Re: Main Forum » 2k Starter Houses? » 2014-04-12 08:43:56

Here's the Harris 2k house, which served me well. I made upgrades pretty quickly though, notably adding a pit before the vault.
