Why is it better to have your wife/family dead than alive?

#1.. traps are easier to design without worrying about family path
#2.. you have 2x more space when defending 1 thing instead of 2
#3.. other than a shotgun (which is solved by having 1 $1200 gun), there is no strategic advantage to having a wife
#4.. there is no advantage to having children other than to activate traps- and a chihuahua can do the same thing

So can someone explain to me what I'm missing by keeping my family alive?

The wife holds half of all your money, in practical terms she acts as a secondary vault which your don't need to prove that you can reach without using tools. Because of this you can use the wife as advantage by blocking the way to her with pitbulls and thus make sure that half of all your money will never be stolen by a player with no tools or even one with 2k worth of tools.

Also: Pet movement is relative to the burglar's movement whereas family movement is constant and predetermined, so you can use panic button traps that would not work the same way if you used pets.

okay #5, defending 2 things is more difficult than defending 1

that fact alone makes them more of a liability than a positive

Re: Why is it better to have your wife/family dead than alive?

to #5: wrong! With a shotgun and a dog your wife is already fairly safe. You could not hide your vault that easily. And therefore your math lacks probability: having two 'treasures' makes it two times harder for people to rob you blank.
Actually, every time I build a starter house with a protected wife, I can leave it alone without worrying about getting to rich to soon, because people normally focus on the vault. I recovered multiple times from being robbed, because of my wife.

In the end I guess it is a matter of taste, whether to play with family or not.

Also, you can check out these threads for infos why and how to protect your family:
