I was just visited by a femme fatale - Carmen Laurence Alexander (or so). Even though she left immediately, I was intrigued to see TCD's male dominance crumble. Now if only she'd worn a dress instead of that unisex outfit...

I may be wrong but I think there's only male (or unisex) names in the list of possible names, as by default the player is the father and their partner is the mother.

Well, if the name occurs in there, it was on the official US Census for 1990 as a name reported by someone who also reported their gender as male.

Toward the end of the list are rarely-reported male names like PATRICIA, JEWEL, and ELISHA.

For those who are interested, the first names for the spouse, son, and daughter came from these Social Security files for the years 1963, 1985, and 1988, respectively:

Wheres the census list is for all people living in 1990, regardless of age, the Social Security lists are specific to birth year, so I could get much more specific with those.

And the names generated aren't just picked at random from the pool---the are picked according to the real-life probability distribution for the names. So, for example, the name James is chosen for the player twice as often as the name Charles.

But honestly: The random name poetry is one of the great things of TCD. Not only is it sweet to see a TCD name for the first time since it's so rare, it also brings out sweet combinations. It's like finding meaning in randomised spam messages. Machine poetry. The future, probably.

Oh, you know, I trimmed that file a bit.

There were 87K last names there. I cut it off at 10K to save space. There are some pretty amazing ones down near the bottom of the list, for sure!

Ah, now that you say it I remember! I just looked for my name because somebody mentioned the possibility, didn't find it at all and then started rummaging around that file a bit and something like that can't be forgotten.
