New wife money behavior

A server-side change:

Your wife now holds onto her portion of the money (and her incoming salary) between your editing sessions, even if your vault gets reached.  So, your vault will be be totally empty after it is reached once (until your next salary payment), so robbers cannot whittle away at your money by easy-reaching your vault repeatedly.

Whenever you come back to edit your house, the money is again evenly divided between vault and wife.

This means that a house that shows $4000 might have $0 when you reach the vault (the wife has all $4000, and there used to be $8000, but a previous robber stole half of it by reaching the vault).

Re: New wife money behavior

Norbert Brewington obviously has no partner (trapdoor on first tile) and earlier they had $25,000 earlier. now they are showing up with $11,000.

did they just spend half their money on a new urn for their partner's ashes?

Re: New wife money behavior

I just logged in and noticed that I had a balance of $0 even though it told me I had earned $X while away working (don't remember exactly what X was, I think it may have been around 1000). Normally this just means somebody has robbed you, but I checked my tapes and there are no successful robberies listed. My wife is dead and gone. Could this be related to the new changes?

By the way, I think these changes make sense. I used to just rob houses that I had figured out over and over to drain away the wife's money. I thought it was sort of silly that half of the wife's money would suddenly appear back in the vault each time.

I think a 'busted vault' sprite would be useful under these new circumstances.

Re: New wife money behavior

Can I suggest that changes not be saved on reaching an empty vault?

Since family defence has to be based on pitbulls, the current behaviour means that once the vault is accessible, even unsuccessful attempts to reach your family will, if saved, weaken the defences - so it's only a matter of time before they're wholly depleted and your family is butchered.

perhaps robberies that get $0 can not save, to prevent the spam-fun?

Re: New wife money behavior

Okay... there was a typo in the new pay-update behavior.... a bad one!

Turns out anyone who had no living spouse at pay-time not only didn't get paid, they lost all their money.

Unfortunately, this wife-holding-money change affected loads of lines in the server code, making it really hard for me to figure out which cases needed to be tested, and I neglected to test this one.

Restoring from the backup that I made about 5 hours ago....

Re: New wife money behavior

Okay, it's fixed now.  Please keep an eye out for any more strange behavior concerning salary and money.

And thanks to everyone who spotted and reported this to me so quickly!

Sorry for the trouble.  sad
