What is the point of paintings?
Why buy it?
Offline
They act like prizes or trophies. They are unique (one piece for each art).
If you are a collector type they will mean a lot to you and you might even consider robbing other players with paintings just to add them to your collection.
"Lore" wise: the art was done (mostly) by other indie developers (confirmation needed here).
If you play other indie games you might recognize many names under the paintings. It adds non materialistic value to the game and to your house.

I had The Knowledge of Good and Evil, and it fit PERFECTLY with my house, but then I made an idiotic leap of "certainty" after getting complacent in another person's house and fried myself... I was honestly more upset about the loss of the painting than the loss of everything else. Doesn't take long to rebuild, though. Just took a fella named Clark for $13,000+ and a LOT of tools, though, so I'm on my way back up. Almost time for new paintings.

(How much) Do paintings add to the value of your house on the leaderboard?

Nothing.
The value on the house list is your current money amount + the sell value of all the tools in your vault. If the sum is higher than 10k, 100k etc. it then gets rounded down to nearest 1000, or 10000 etc. I don't know all the specifics but that's the general idea.
