Today i played The Castle Doctrine for the first time, and already watched some clips on how to play. so what i found strange is that twice i stood next to a vault, wanted to move on that tile and had nothing happen. there was always wiring under the vault, and a dark grey square on top of the vault, as if it was placed over a powered door and the door was stuck in it. i think it is an exploit, because one of the vaults was right next to the door, hinting at intent. is this an exploit or is this like a fake vault or something?

Vaults? There should only be one vault. Dark grey square? Are you sure you weren't seeing a concrete wall? http://castledraft.com/editor/RgZF6A
Or maybe an empty vault? If the vault is robbed, it'll be empty until the owner returns.

Im sure it was a vault (beige box, blue dots on top), but it was like the black thingy (the thing which for the looks represents the combination turner i guess) on front was on top of it as well. perhaps of interest is that all vaults were facing left into a wall. and the name list said the persons had money, so the vault cant be empty right? i entered never more than 5 secs after a list refresh.

Did the vault look like this?

Because if so, that means the vault has already been raided and the wife is holding the rest of the money.
As far as I understand it:
Whenever you complete a self test your cash is split between you and your wife. Your tools remain in the vault.
If the wife kills a robber then she holds the cash bounty until you next complete a self test. Any tools the robber was carrying go into the vault. If the robber dies via any other means in the house their bounty and tools both go to the vault.

Oh, yeah, sounds like you ran into an empty vault that had already been hit by someone else. That's always a danger when going into a house (like in the movies.... "The vault is ... empty. Empty? Emtpy!? EMMMPPPTYYYY!").
Also, you can always mouse over something to see what it is (tool tip at the bottom of the screen). If the vault is empty, the tool tip will say that.

Ah that probably explains it, thanks for clearing that up. Fair in a cruel way. Oceans Twelve will never feel the same again

I'll add something to the FAQ about broken vaults as I think there have been a few questions about them in the past.

Thanks for keeping up with that FAQ, Josh! It's really turning into a great resource.
