So twice now I feel like I've been robbed for more than I have. A slight aside: am I misunderstanding that the wife has to exit the house as opposed to just not be killed? Either way, it still doesn't add up. I exit with less than $1,000 (somewhere between 600-700 I'm pretty sure). I log back in a few hours later and the tapes show two people die giving me $200 bounties each, and then someone robs me for $2200. I come back in with $519. What am I missing?

The robbers have left tools in your house when they die. Have the price of the tools are added to the "value" of the vault and so that is what is adding to the amount stolen.

Thanks for the info. Does it only add to the value of the vault and not my dollar amount available to spend?

It won't immediately appear as cash but you can sell the tools for half their buying price.

Oh, I didn't realize you meant they literally show up in my vault as items I can use/sell. I never check my vault since I don't really go robbing. I feel like this information could help flesh out the wiki a bit. It's a bit scant on details like this. Assuming I understand you correctly, I'll update it in the morning. Thanks again for the clarification.

Thanks for pitching in with the Wiki, anable!
Yes, you have that correct. The "amount stolen" as it shows up in your security tapes is the total cash stolen PLUS he resale value of any tools stolen (currently 50% of their purchase price). On that tape, you can't see what tools were stolen, but you can see the tools carried by previous robbers on previous tapes, and note which ones died (if they left the house with unused tools remaining, you don't get those).

Thanks for making this game jason!
Turns out the info was already there, just under the tools heading. Added a line to the bounty section as well, for blind people like myself.
