If you want to keep your house when you get robbed down to $0 your best bet is to rob some low value houses, 200-400. Hopefully once you're at non-zero value you will attract robbers.

Carefuly choose and rob a ~$400 house, you should be able to find one that isn't just a case of guessing. Once you have that you will probably attract some robbers overnight, or be able to rob a house further up the list.

You should give a try on one of those low value homes where lots of people have died already, usually they are pretty banged up and you can find the way to the vault just by following the wake of destruction.
