New Compact Clock Design!

I've created a new binary counter bit and modified the clock signal generator to allow for the creation of a complete 5-bit binary clock that fits into the top or bottom 4 rows of the map:

http://castledraft.com/editor/UMMwt8

You can easily mirror it so that it runs from left to right if you'd prefer.

For those not used to clocks the different bits will alternate in power of two ratios - from the right to the left you will see the lights alternate every 1,2,4,8 and 16 moves. Create it yourself and have a look. Moves in electronics occur whenever the robber moves OR uses a tool.

It is easy to feed the alternating power from either the top or bottom of the bit - to do so from the bottom just connect to the indicator light. From the top, place a wire bridge over one of the horizontal wires.

As an example:
http://castledraft.com/editor/c5NQgO

In this house each pit is attached to a different bit of the clock meaning that it will alternate between closed and open over a different number of turns. The first pit
will alternate every 16 turns, the second every 8, the third every 4, the fourth every 2 and the last every turn.

To attach from above this will work:

You can also attach the final output of the timer to a bit storage unit to create constant power that only begins in 32 turns (31 moves).

Here is an example - the power will switch in to the the pits and electric floors after 31 moves and stay on:

Have fun! Read my original clocks thread if you want to know how it works.

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

Ooh, sweet. I always build my clocks at the top and connecting them was a pain.

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

For people who want a simple 1-bit clock, this may be more compact:

The pulse generator (top 3 rows) is identical, while the bit counter is a design I found some time ago. I wonder if there exists a way to combine the generator and the counter to make an even more compact clock...

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

I've noticed that the content on clocks on the wiki is fairly poor so I've created a Clocks Guide. It still needs a fair bit of work, some images would be nice and the explanation of how things work needs to be filled in.

I was thinking of copying over colorfusion's explanation of the signal generator from the steam forums but realised that the design is different from my updated one and so it could be confusing.

I guess adding some examples for connecting that can be built for less than $2000 would be a good idea as well, the current connecting example is pretty expensive.

arakira: That is pretty neat! Perhaps we should add it to the guide as well.

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

Could one of you geniuses please help me come up with a design that uses arakira's <$200 clock in a newbie house? I finally got robbed for 28k and want to try something new!

These two houses were expensive, but maybe they can help give you ideas on how to use clocks in interesting ways: http://thecastledoctrine.net/forums/vie … php?id=855

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

Can you explain how to solve those 2 houses. Also if you don't mind, can you maybe share a little bit about your current (penn, i think) house? no need to see a whole floor plan, i'm not going to try to rob you, but all your other stuff is so cool, i'm just wondering what you came up with this time. does it use clocks even? or just trickery?

Not to be trusted? Pshhh. Name one hundred ninety thousand reasons I would use that information for evil.

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

I explained in the that post but I'll be happy to answer questions.

House 1
You have to magic dance to get the dog safely to the button in the middle. The traps the dog has to cross.... they are powered by a 2-bit clock instead of the 1-bit clock you normally see on the path. Once you do the dance correctly, that's it. The door starts opening/closing. The cat trap is deactivated. You simply walk to the vault.

House 2

The self test involve me going all the way to the end, and then using the final dog door there as a magic dance to turn back on the safety of the clock, turn it off long enough to get the 2 dogs out, turn it back on, and then fry them at the top.

So the clock actually protects you from the dogs in that house, but you have to kill the bottom two dogs to get to the safe. The trick is really about hiding the vault in an unexpected location.

Also if you don't mind, can you maybe share a little bit about your current (penn, i think) house?

Heh. It's quite boring actually. The higher you get, the harder "interesting" houses are to defend. Josh has said if you want to make a puzzle house you should probably stay below $30k. So anyway. No clocks. You should already know there are magic dances. A combo lock or two is thrown in for good measure. Good luck!

Re: New Compact Clock Design!

It's really not that bad. You already know how to do magic dances, I've seen that!

The 1-bit clock part is really simple in concept. The clock toggles every the robber moves or uses a tool. On. Off. On. Off. The way I've used this is to have hallways of alternating deadly-when-ON/deadly-when-OFF traps. If you stay in line and don't use tools, you're protected.

There are many other uses for clocks, but I found that to be the most interesting.

The best house is the one you build with the money you get from robbing a $10k house with $3.8k of tools. wink

LOL!!!

serious tip though... the best house is always one that's not been displayed on the internet smile
another serious note; the best house will always be the one you created yourself. (sense of self achievement)
