The fact that someone retraced his steps doesn't make him a bot. If you had a combination lock with hundreds or thousands of possibilities and he happened to trip the right one on the first try, THAT might be suspicious. But retracing your steps is something most players do all the time.

Has anyone thought about a good-ol' fakeout by putting the safe behind your family, then you make line of sight with your family and cause them to leave, which leaves the vault wide open? I guess you could include traps behind your family too just to make it less obvious (and still difficult for someone to get there), but it seems like a good case of sort of hiding the vault in plain sight.

At least in my experience, most players assume that where the family is, there is nothing else.

When the game records a movement, couldn't it just essentially relay it to the owner of the house who is watching? So you start watching a "tape" where you receive the steps one at a time as they're made.

I wish I could see how some of the burglars squirm at my traps! Like if they contemplate beforehand or just charge in.

Magic Dances still mystify me. I get that they're supposed to be obscure and hard to figure out, but is there a way around them other than knowing the specific movements?

Is there any chance a feed addon could be implemented where we could pay an up front cost (say $1000 for even round numbers), to "set up" live cameras in our house instead of recorded cameras.

Then, if our house is being robbed, and we happen to try to go back at the time it's being robbed, we can watch the robber's attempt in real time? Perhaps even with a notification to the robber, something that doesn't materially affect gameplay but sort of like "You are being watched" or "The house owner is watching you" to add a little bit of extra intimidation factor?

So I had to wait for a long time to even get through to the forums again.

In fact I'm not even too confident this message is going to post, so I'll keep it brief!

Why are the servers so messed up? I have had multiple really really REAAAALLY long loads (I got to Retrying Server 30+ I think lol). The contest is over, so shouldn't the servers be settling down, if nothing else?

#7 Re: Main Forum » web error login = death » 2014-01-27 21:25:53

Server seems to be having some problems in general lately. I have had several problems connecting in the last hour.

This was a post in the Meta-Game and Trap Mechanics thread:

Alaorath wrote:

Great stuff guys!  I've taken the liberty of adding them to the "Advanced" section of the wiki.

Not to throw Alaorath under the bus or anything but I assume he was the one who made the change you're speaking of, Josh.

The fix should be fairly easy though, simply create a new page called traps guide or trap mechanics and cut/paste everything over, no?

#9 Re: Main Forum » Meta-Game and Common Trap Mechanics » 2014-01-27 19:29:12

RockyBst (or anyone else), for the Schrodinger's Corpse leap of faith, I'm guessing the switch beneath the pit bull is unpowered, right? Meaning that the dog stepping on it does absolutely nothing (despite the fact that it looks like it should do something)?

Thanks for the clarifications ventuswings.

#11 Re: Main Forum » How these last few minutes of the contest feel.. » 2014-01-27 18:41:12

Can you imagine how this would've seemed in real life?

Honey, I'm home. How was your day, Jessica? I mean, Karen? I mean, Julie, right? No - Annie? Marie. Donna? Screw it, I'm leaving.

Blip and Iceman, now that you guys have shared your designs with us, do you mind if I post some of them in the Meta-Game and Trap Mechanics thread? Since they're already here for people to see I assume that you don't mind but I wanted to get permission from you folks first.

I thought that but you move first, then animals, the electric circuits... If you are standing on the electric floor (obviously off) and you move to the trapdoor (off) you die before the dog can move and before the power can turn on the floor. At least thats the understanding I have.

That's the understanding I had too, but... apparently not? Wonder if Jason can comment on this.

#15 Re: Main Forum » A New House Design Thread » 2014-01-27 18:26:17

iceman, this seems like an incredibly newbish and uneducated question, and maybe because it's Monday at the end of the work day, but how the crap did that house ever pass self-test? The trap-door/electric floor combo at the entrance seems impossible.

It looks like we are locked out of our houses (even on new lives) for 5 minutes.

#17 Re: Main Forum » DRASTIC RESPONSE: Contest campers » 2014-01-27 17:23:22

I THINK that the tools are only considered truly "out" of your vault when you enter someone else's house and bring them with you. Otherwise they're just queued up to be taken out but still in your vault. I could be wrong but that's my understanding.

EDIT:

OH WAIT is this change only temporary for the final few minutes of the contest? I must have misunderstood that part.

#18 Re: Main Forum » DRASTIC RESPONSE: Contest campers » 2014-01-27 17:17:14

What about edits that take a long time?

For example, when I start a new game the first thing I do is spend $2k on tools and try to make it back (plus some) with a big heist. THAT's when I start to actually construct my home defense. How will that style of play be affected? It sounds like I am going to have to keep hitting "Done" then self-test, then rush to go back into edit mode before someone can enter my house, and repeat this process every several minutes. Is that about right?

#19 Re: Main Forum » Fitt's Law » 2014-01-27 17:14:15

This has happened to me before. Usually it's when I create a new game, have a few successful heists and then take too long to edit a house.

Because frankly, $2000 isn't enough to make a really defensible house imo. But that's part of the beauty of the game lol.

#20 Re: Main Forum » Meta-Game and Common Trap Mechanics » 2014-01-27 17:09:24

I have been considering the idea of a house with a failsafe. I am sure this has been tried before but I haven't seen it personally so I'm not sure how the mechanics of it turn out in actual gameplay:

If there were a way to make a power source so appealing to short out (at the mere cost of $100) that a player would almost CERTAINLY short it out if they saw it, but unbeknownst to them it also powers trap doors leading to the vault.

Once they short the power source, the other traps in the house are disabled, but now that the trapdoors are unpowered (and cannot be powered back on), the vault is unreachable without ladders (which are expensive and likely make the theft not worthwhile).

Has anyone tried this? How has it worked out for you?

#21 Re: Main Forum » Meta-Game and Common Trap Mechanics » 2014-01-27 17:01:21

g0m some of that is too high-level for me.

What makes me laugh is that some of these are actual people's houses (self-tests wouldn't display a name of the owner).

Wow I come back from lunch and suddenly the thread is stickied! Thanks Jason. I will do my best to keep it up-to-date!

I'm afraid I was the evil genius behind the idea of a house full of dogs behind doors. I've seen many people do it later on.

Then I did the Electric Floor+Sticking Pressure Switch+Power Source trio into every corridor. Evil again, and got quickly copied. big_smile

Now I'm trying something more sinister...

This is exactly what I hope to achieve with this thread.

I'm not familiar with this one. Is it something like this?

Electric floors, you mean?

I tend to shy away from electric floor, because it *could* refer to trapdoors (it's a floor when it's powered)... do you think power grids is harder to understand?

I see your point, but I think power grids could also potentially be confused for power sources. I don't think many people will confuse electric floor for powered trapdoors though. But that's just me.
