Congrats to the winners (Except you #3, I hate you for stealing $80 from me, and my favorite painting. I hope you realize you're a horrible person for taking my money and potential belongings. We could have been friends, you could have let me live a nice and happy life, but no...), very interesting ending. I'm definitely amazed how close to the top I was before losing 60k to someone with ~25k with of tools and then losing my 35k house right after from the damaged self-test. If I managed to finish my upgrades before getting kicked out of my house for being idle, and then all of my money was stolen... I would have been able to fully fill the entire space I had available. I can't believe how many paintings you stole from me, I had like 8 or 9 paintings. sad You even used the one of the ones you stole from me as your own favorite painting! And it wasn't even one of the better ones... Soo disappointed.

(Contest winner #3) David Travis Lopez was the one who robbed me yesterday for 60k in this house. (Slightly different and not as upgraded as my house actually was, but close enough to be able to tell the resemblance)
http://castlefortify.com/c/6033991
The right side would have had 6 more layers of metal walls, and the entire maze was upgraded to metal with dogs added. (the costs for upgrades were going to be 40k, but then I lost it due to "idling" while trying to make my map. And was robbed some time later.)

This design managed to kill over 100 people over the past couple days. I'm sure a few of you probably stepped into it and considered a few different things. Some of you might have even stepped into the top and attempted my dog maze, but it was very hard without a map. (I added extra dogs in the fortify link so you don't know my exact route used during the contest)

It was a very efficient way to fill up large portions of the map for pretty cheap. Definitely doesn't seem as balanced when comparing some blocks costs to things like powered doors. There are multiple traps (Like the one RIGHT in my doorway) which are being abused to get tons of kills and people have almost no chance to beat them.

I've been playing this game since v3, but now it's all the way up to v30. The real winner here is clearly Jason, congrats on getting your game to Steam. I still really wish I could have gotten a painting though. :S

I accidentally idled too long while trying to take pictures of my house, and I ended up getting kicked out of my house. Then before I get back, I get robbed for $60,000. The guy came in with like 45 sleeping pills, 8 clubs, 20 water bottles, guns, torches, and all kinds of things. It was really lame to see someone just buy their way into my safe.

Damn you for taking my chance at getting any money David Travis Lopez! I hope you lose your house in a test.

He stole my favorite painting too...

I like the idea of a limit for dog movement, something more like 9 spaces in every direction would be more likely IMO.

Exactly, but you've already walked past the traps that lock you in, and even though you know you made the mistake, there is no undo button and you lose it all.

Howrad wrote:

Jason, whatever you have done to stop spam is clearly not enough.  Spammers are still starting new topics.

There's another option though, which I used myself in phpBB.  It does not require CAPTCHAs, and it does not annoy real users.

First you have to understand what these spambots are generally doing:
-- They probably found this board by searching for "Powered by FluxBB" in Google.  Some may also search for "Index User list Search Register Login" in order to find boards that removed the FluxBB footer.
-- Requiring valid email addresses won't stop the more advanced spambots, which know how to receive the default FluxBB email and use it.
-- When they post anonymously, they know to fill in the req_username, req_email, and req_message fields.
-- When they register, they know how to fill in req_user, req_email1, and req_email2.
-- They know that the buttons are called "Submit" and "Preview"
-- They know the addresses register.php, login.php, and post.php, and can navigate there directly by URL.

So the solution, of course, is to change FluxBB names from their defaults.  Change the "Submit" button, change the names of the req_ fields, change the names of the php files.  If you want to be really fancy, make req_message into a hidden field, and make the actual visible field called req_real_message.  Then, if anyone submits a req_message, you know they're a spambot.  You can do a similar thing with the register page.

The users won't even notice it, but it should stop the spambots cold.  Hope it works for you!

Great Job Howrad! It's good to know there's people out there that are still trying to stop these guys. tongue

I would love to see a "safe-test" mode.  You could still keep the "murder-yourself" live test as a requirement before publishing the house, but let me play with my house a little bit first.

This would be perfect. A second button that we could use to test the house, and press a button while testing at any time to return to the editor. That way you could check your traps and things to make sure they work the way you want, and then you could safely return without losing anything after you prove that your traps are effective.

Yeah, as much as I love this game, it is becoming a problem that 75% of houses are now just bit-lock combos with 9 thick walls. It's no fun, completely unoriginal and the time it would take to actually play out every combo is maddening, and not possible for most of us. Its not Jason's fault for everyone figuring out how to do this so fast; and once you get more than 5k its really hard to keep it for more than 5 minutes and bit-locks seem like the best possible way, so I kind of understand the want to make bit-lock houses. But on the other hand I am finding myself playing the game less and less each day because of the repetitive bit-lock grind that it has become.

Both these posts have communicated pretty well how a lot of us feel I think. You get any money at all and if you're not behind a bit-lock or something seriously clever then you get it all nabbed away pretty fast. The whole [   0       0   ] thing just screams ROB ME!

But it's really sad to hear there's a lot of cheaters breaking into locks now. :\  I've started moving on to electric floor path techniques. Then the average run-of-the-mill cheaters can't get in, only the ones that are cheating and being able to see the whole map.

Huh, so then how did the guy manage to get into my house without using the right combination? I don't really understand how it's possible because if I tried to re-create exactly what he did, I would have been trapped inside and died. :\

I hate to say it, but it seems like you guys are just being sore losers. Unless you have an actual video of the cheating, Jason cant be sure. They might've just gotten lucky.

Either you are in this group of cheaters/hackers, or you didn't read our posts. The guy that robbed me pressed every button, including ones that should have locked him out, and yet his edited code allowed him to get into my base.

Heres a video of him robbing my house with visibility on. Note the fact that the doors are locked in the beginning, and yet he comes in after hitting every button. After he walks in, you can see the ones that SHOULDN'T be active, and yet he just walks on in. This is guaranteed hacks, and this player should be banned regardless of whether or I was using a bit-lock.

#12 Re: Main Forum » Question about save-states AND did I get cheated? » 2013-04-04 21:43:56

I'm sorry to hear about that. I too have lost at least 4 characters where I was trying to get back into my house and I accidentally went the wrong direction or they released dogs into an area that was not previously possible. Or they disabled floors that were supposed to be on because they turned off power thinking it would free up an entryway, but it only made it more impossible. I think the whole problem comes into the fact that there is no chance for you to try and get in if you make ANY mistake WHATSOEVER. Which is usually okay, but when you accidentally add power to an area or lose power in an area and your expected mental picture doesn't line up with what's happening, you might lose it all if you made a mistake and locked yourself inside because it used to work and doesn't anymore.

Needless to say, you lose a lot of characters while testing, but it's these mistakes you make that help you learn a lot. After you try so hard and end up failing you can get pretty angry. But in the end, you'll realize it's all re-attainable. So although it sucks right, you can probably get it back at some point. (Assuming it's not behind a bit-lock, then only those who are lucky and the lame cheaters are getting those)

I've seen a guy worth 70,000 and had 0 attempts, 0 deaths. I immediately went to it and I noticed it was a safe and wife, but I had no crowbar. So I left immediately, and came back with a crowbar and I was lucky enough to still be the first guy to try again. So I clubbed his wife, made $0, and I got 149 guns and like 80 ladders. I sold 100 guns and had like $30,000 and I managed to re-make the base I had lost like 45 minutes before and bought back most of the paintings I had, plus a few more. I have no idea how that guy had those items or why he had no defense but it sure helped me, haha. Keep in mind the game is in alpha right now so nothing is final.

What I hope happens is that we are given at least 1 grace life while testing per successful completion (with a max of 1 or 2 or something) and you aren't guaranteed to lose everything if you messed up entering your code because your keyboard stuck and went twice in one direction instead of once, you accidentally input the wrong combination for something but you locked yourself inside a cage, and etc: I understand the hardcore concept but I feel like sometimes when you have a room that people can use 8 items to get out of, but you get 0 to try, it just isn't fair. They can easily come in and out to try it with only a couple items while you would have died every time you made any mistake at all. You know just how hard it is sometimes to get to the exit, while they can just saw, weld, and put a ladder over a couple things sometimes and just get to the exit within a couple steps if they are lucky.

Edit:
Hahaha, after writing this I logged into my house and tried to get into my house because someone tried to get in and it was different. So I tried getting in and before I could even get past my pads it killed me so I died while testing it. A perfect example, I couldn't have gotten in if I wanted to, nor could anyone else. The only way to have won would have been to not log in I guess?

#13 Re: Main Forum » Robbed but no security tape? » 2013-04-03 15:37:30

That's also why you'll see numbers go up in your security tape logs, and you may have a number like [ 17    2  ], but you may only have like 3 logs of people trying to rob you. That would mean of the 17, only 3 of them did something that would get them recorded. (That something is noted in the post by rmmh above)

Hahaha, yeah I've been the victim of this one myself. Before I'd spent a lot of time trying to raid pitbull infested houses, I didn't realize I would wake the pitbull up if I tried to walk around it. The sleeping pills seem kinda worthless when for $12 more you can get a crowbar that will do twice the job the pill does.

#15 Re: Main Forum » House Design Planning Template (Image) » 2013-04-03 13:03:33

I was hoping for something like this, thanks Setz. Now all we need is someone to make a program in Java or something that can place things on a grid easily and save them as a file for even easier planning. tongue

I have done that atleast 3-5 times myself. Once I made a 30k steal on a house I had been casing all night. I was SO stoked, went back to my house and spent 2 hours building a 30k maze. I tried out the house only to find out at the end I left ONE pitbull outside a door which led to my death as well as my face slapping my forehead. Now before I finish my house I have chihuahuas in the place of pit bulls so that just in case I leave one out I dont die. :)

This!

Made this house V  (It's small because I don't want you copying it or finding out how to get through it if I re-make it in the future. ;)
2tg7I

Made a giant house, super hard to get into. I knew the way in and it had multiple different combo locks you had to press in/out and if you accidentally pressed the wrong buttons you locked an extra set of doors guarding the combo's. And I accidentally went up at one part instead of down because I forgot how much I had added in the last bit.

And then POOF, it's all gone. :V

#17 Re: Main Forum » Source code alteration questions » 2013-04-03 10:36:47

Since Jason is aware of this, he will probably be fixing this soon. If he made it check the consistency of each properties.txt file every time it connects, then that would probably be able to stop it. But as far as I know, his plan to prevent this has not yet been released.

Losing paintings is worse than losing money.

I lost a bunch to a server error-- I had a sequence of landscapes at dawn, noon, sunset, and night that went together perfectly.

I just lost everything I had, I am so pissed and bummed! By the way, when you lost a bunch to a server error, was it due to your house having an error loading? I just had an error loading my $50,000 and $30,000 house that was full of all these paintings, and it deleted everything and put me in a default empty house with 2k. So damn pissed, I lost everything i had and my giant base too. After losing everything like this I'm probably going to be taking a break from castle doctrine for a while now. I tried so hard to get it all and to have it all cheated away from me due to server error is really sad.I like the thought of permadeath, but when my shit gets deleted when it's not my fault it's not fun, or cool. And it really makes me not even want to play.

What I should have because it went on auction when it bugged and deleted my stuff:
2t8XD

What I lost in the bug and error while loading my house (All of these paintings are mine, and when I had an error loading my house it shipped them all into the auctions like I had actually died):
2t8XH

This happened after I tried robbing someone, when I successfully robbed them and it tried to load my house, it gave me a "House load error" and it deleted everything, loading the default house as if I never even had any status or prestige. Plus it deleted the 50 recordings or so that I had. T_T

What I have now:
2t91r

So now that I've lost everything for absolutely no reason, I think I'll be taking a break. I hope you look into these issues Jason because the thought of losing EVERYTHING when you don't even make a mistake is mind-blowingly lame. I didn't even get the chance to die in someones house. I will come back if you manage to restore my stuff, but if not then you probably wont see me for a while.
(And I have a full-size picture of my exact house before it was deleted if you need it to prove it was mine.)

I'm guessing you managed to rob him, then he came back and cheated through your house with a new character.

Hey, you're right actually. That's EXACTLY who it was. And I think you may be right on that too, he tried a ton of times immediately after. Seriously though, I am 100% positive this guy was hacking and if Jason would take a look into it we could get this guy permabanned. He setup his voltage triggered switches to not even change when they are activated, so he could hit every button in a bit-lock, and despite it being the wrong combination, he could still easily get in. I've still got the recording of it, and I even took a video of the recording because I wasn't sure at first if he was actually cheating or if it bugged out or something.

#22 Re: Main Forum » Big steals » 2013-04-02 17:28:29

I got lucky guessing a combination in a bit lock and got all their paintings, only to have a cheater take them all away. sad
2sODu

James Kyle Gagne stole 17870 from me and a ton of paintings. He walked in, pressed every key in my 6-bit combo lock, so the exit should have been closed because he hit like 5 wrong buttons. However, the exit was actually open so he just walked in and stole it. I'm guessing it was a cheat or something so if Jason looked it up I would be stoked. I saw my paintings go up in auction an hour later too.
