MMaster, any chance you're still around, and can restart the community server?

Sad to see you leave sad  Good luck and have fun with your other endeavors, though!

What was the house that Kimenzar has already taken down?

#30 Re: Main Forum » R.I.P. Derek Ralph McMahan » 2014-06-02 13:41:10

Is the map supposed to have something other than dogs?

#31 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Stephen Thomas Geyer [spoiler alert p3] » 2014-05-23 11:54:30

Yeah, I'd like to know how to get to the bottom left vault as well.  That's where I thought it would be, after Puma had explored the many, many cat hallways, but I didn't have a clue about the cat in the bottom left corner, so I probably wouldn't have made any progress.

I absolutely LOVED this house because of one little area- the exit after scaring the cat across the center pits.  I knew you had to get up there and scare the cat down, but I couldn't figure out how it was possible to get back down there after that.  Then, suddenly, I realized- one of the powered doors to the left didn't recieve power from below.  Your house uses powered doors as walls so much that you were actually able to make a fake wall!  When I did go through that area, it felt like I was crawling through this cramped, secret tunnel that shouldn't have existed.  Pretty much the exact same feelings as going through the non-test chamber areas in Portal, actually!

Still hanging around, although I haven't been playing very much.

Puma, I actually gave you a hint that Iceman picked up on.

Iceman, I'm wondering what your different approach is.

Nope, still a pit there sad
I was just checking the top 2 possible vault locations- I was thinking the one going right instead of down was impossible without tools, but then I remembered there'd be a dead cat in that pit, so the pathing would work out.  No luck, though.

Wait- come to think of it, there *is* a third possible vault location that I haven't checked since you updated... hmmm... I don't think it's going to be there, so I'm going to try somewhere I've given up on next....

Also- hint?  What hint? XD

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a simple solution for either of you that have been unable to connect.  I'll probably switch everything to a new server, which *should* fix the issue, but I'll only have time to do that in a week sad

Its not in its last known location..i've checked at least 3 times.

Ok, I thought you had checked all of the cat paths, and I had checked what I thought was the only other option.  There's still one more option, though, that I just figured out how to do tool-less, so I'll try that tomorrow.  I figured racing you with the cat paths was a failing strategy, so I'm taking a different approach.

#36 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Stephen Thomas Geyer [spoiler alert p3] » 2014-05-15 18:44:09

If you left the vault where it was last time....

Cylence wrote:

Haven't seen you in there lately. You taking a break from visiting Geyer's? I can tell between you and Puma because the way each of you handle the dogs is different.

No, I've just been dying really, really stupidly.  This last life was me checking somewhere again, since I thought all of the cat paths were ruled out (no tools).

I think it might be just you and one other playing with the kitten cluster. Don't forget to say hello to all the dogs while you are there smile.

That other one is me!  I'm going for my 3rd (well, really my 2nd because of bad tool choice) kitten path, so we'll be racing for that wink

Oh, and just because you said that, Cylence, I am going to visit EVERY dog I know of >:D
(Well, not counting the ones you can't see from the entrance, since I can't afford *that*!)

EDIT: Never mind, maybe later- completely forgot to use the gun I brought on the first dog!

EDIT2: Aaaaaand now I feel like even more of an idiot! Guess I'll stay at 1 hallway scouted for now....

You can post the map, and I'll just ignore it until I succeed.

For those interested, it should be Ichabod's new house in FT in the next couple of hours.

#39 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Ronald Michael Jensen [spolier alert p4] » 2014-05-12 04:14:51

Yeah, I never realized that I had never actually enabled it; whoops!

#40 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Ronald Michael Jensen [spolier alert p4] » 2014-05-11 18:50:01

Awwww... I was so close!  1 more day to reach the magic dance the way it was supposed to be reached, then another couple to figure it out/break through it, and I'd be golden sad (at least I think so wink)  Anyways, it'd be great if you send me the map code!  I might even have Ichabod host it in FT, so Puma can try breaking through one scout at a time again if he wants.

Just wondering- it really looked like your wife was dead, but I could see you doing something really tricky like putting her just below the trident.  Since people can just cut straight through to near the end, they'd most likely skip the bottom, reach the end, and think she's dead.  Is that what you did?

Yeah, like Cylence said, I've gotten past it as well.  My advice is very similar to what I'd give for any puzzle game- if you can't figure out a solution, just let that part rest for a bit, explore more of the house, and eventually, when you're not thinking of how to solve it, the answer will come to you!

#42 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Ronald Michael Jensen [spolier alert p4] » 2014-05-10 10:06:34

Well that was quite the profitable scout big_smile I finally found your magic dance!  As for where I died- I KNEW about the button on the other side of the door- that's why I picked that hallway.  It just never registered in my mind that it might be a good idea to press it...

Guessing that was you again, iceman, at the trident area?

How'd you guess tongue I'm really sad I had to kill the chihuahua like that- I really expected that hallway to continue for quite a bit longer.  Still, anything to prevent his legs from shattering and his slowly starving to death at the bottom of the trapdoor when I opened it tongue

I figured it would be something about the game checking for validity of the move on all moves and -then- moving everyone.

No, animals definitely take turns moving.  It starts at bottom left, and goes up row by row.  That's what leads to all of the different pet movement quirks.

For instance, in the example you posted: http://castledraft.com/editor/FjKqqD
The order explains why you can step on the first cat going down, but can't going up.  Here's what happens:
UP
1. Player movement: Step on cat
2. Pet movement:
--Cat is lowest, so it moves first, going down
--Dog is next lowest, free to move down, bites robber

Result: Dead robber

DOWN
1. Player movement: Step on cat
2. Pet movement:
--Dog is lowest, tries to move up, cat is blocking movement
--Cat is next lowest, tries to run away from robber, succeeds

Result: Live robber

The same thing happens with chihuahua dances: if the chihuahua moves first, you'll survive.  For instance, if you're on the chihuahua in this house:
http://castledraft.com/editor/c5mwOH
Going left or down will kill you, since in both cases the pit bull will move onto the hallway entrance before you do.  If you go right or up, however, the chihuahua will move beside the door before the pit bull does, so you'll survive.

Anyways, sorry that I started this mild case of derailment off of the topic of family protection wink

The first dog will keep moving, the second dog will be stopped by the first cat-in-pit. I don't know exactly why, I guess all pets move at the same time. But I've seen it.

Wow, you're right- I should've tested it myself before =P It's not that they all move at the same time, but an animal is only registered as "dead" for movement purposes the turn after it dies.

on the bottom path, the cats will all jump in pits and the dogs will not move, and will remain stuck behind their respective pits.  NOT SO for the top path.  When going up (and east) if the dog and cat see you at the same time, (or more accurately, if the pit is empty when the dog sees you) then the dog will just walk right past the cat pit.

I don't think this is true- if the dog moves first, the cat's in the way.  If the cat moves first, he jumps in the pit, and then the dog can't move.

TheRealCheese wrote:

So the goal is to get the bottom one looking like this http://castledraft.com/editor/dPc2xo

Just a note: if you space the dogs by 2 the whole way down, then you'll end up with one side being weaker than the other.  In that map, going straight down the right side (drugging the dogs on the left and using ladders) is cheaper than killing the dogs, and MUCH cheaper than going down the left side.  To fix it, about halfway through you should put a dog 1 tile further than you would've, so that the pattern changes.

Like so:

Yeah, I've seen a few "animal presses hidden switch" areas, which technically is a magic dance, but no blatant "Dog sees you at start from 8 pits away and you have to dance correctly or use wire cutters for the next 30 steps" cases tongue

#49 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Ronald Michael Jensen [spolier alert p4] » 2014-05-07 17:04:41

Well, that didn't work out the way I hoped... good thing I used those bricks, huh? =P

The more I explore your houses (Jensen and Geyer), the more I am impressed... not a single magic dance or combo lock (well, at least not blatant ones), so many *different* paths to choose, paths that seem like good solutions and take several tries to discover they're just red herrings, paths that seem like red herrings with no solution but end up being possible when approached from a different angle (literally wink), tiny details that end up being the key to the solution, parts of the house interacting that have no business interacting... they've just been really fun to map out!

#50 Re: Main Forum » To the visitors of Stephen Thomas Geyer [spoiler alert p3] » 2014-05-06 19:04:47

Nope- I stepped into a trapdoor at the top, carrying some explosives, among other tools.
