Hmmm, I guess that makes sense; that didn't occur to me. But it does bring you to your house upon logging in, so in order to really take advantage of this, you'd need to just leave TCD in the list view mode forever. I suppose you could then have access to others' houses while yours remained broken, but since you'd never have any tools, I'd think that would be of limited use.

#52 Re: Main Forum » Alt-Tab Crash » 2013-07-28 13:02:23

Yeah, I've had issues with alt tabbing a couple times as well. It caused a crash once for me too. Usually it work all right though.

Sadly I have been broken into and had my wife killed sad  It was once again some random guy with far too much money to be sensibly acquired through regular means...

Came in at first with over $20,000 in tools and laddered me, and stole under $10,000.

Then he came back later with $8,000 worth of tools to kill my wife for $4,000.

Anyway, here is the design, as I won't be building it again and I think people were curious about it (hence the great desire to break the damn thing!)

http://castlefortify.com/c/c63d6f1

It is crazy simple in its concept.  Chase the cat in the right order to turn the button off one step.  The first twist I placed is that the final step has to be onto the powered electric floor, and the second is that the path is created out of animals, thus going backstage to see how the wizard works, just nets you a bunch of cats.

I also liked the macguffin I placed with the dog at the switches.  Always good to have a solid distraction.

Yeah, as you certainly saw in another thread the second robber was me, but the first was not. The money I used to get your wife was acquired by robbing Mr. Smith's house, which I robbed on starting funds. So this wasn't a case of pumping or double accounts or friends teaming up. I had planned to try and kill your wife before the mystery guy came in with ladders (that was a complete surprise to me).

Also, I've been trying to avoid robbing poorer houses ($2k - 3k) and have been focused mostly on the middle to rich houses. Robbing poor houses is not really fun, but is often necessary when building your own house (to expedite your accumulation of funds).

Or, more likely IMO, somebody else saw the $1000 house and went to take the rest.

No, because after I cracked his house, I went in with a new character with no tools at all and did his house. So I left without any damage. All his traps were still intact...

...of course I did come back and murder his wife and kids later, so my hands are hardly clean... roll

Hmm.. .what does Victor's house look like? Just curious because I happen to have $68k and someone got about halfway to my vault recently. I'm not robbing anyone and I cant check the list, since my house has been broken for a week or so.

But if your house is still broken, i.e. you haven't logged into that account for a week or so, then how did you know that you had $68000?

jere wrote:

I suggested resetting all houses every time for robbers, but maintaing the damage for the home owner to return to.

But then a homeowner can simply leave his house online and never bother logging back in. Since nothing will ever change for robbers, his house will remain in a fully secure state forever. I don't see any way to implement any kind of curb on how damage to houses is saved in order to prevent broken houses. So long as there is a way for certain kinds of damage to be saved, people will be able to figure out how that damage renders their house broken.

Note: Lots of edits of this post, sorry about that. A bunch of posts that I had missed popped up.

victor has $70,000 or whatever, but it is going to cost, what, $10, $20, $30, $40,000 in tools to rob? yes, profitable. but which part of that is interesting, really?
cracking codes feels very rewarding, but brute forcing to a vault is not so much. and when the house is broken, brute forcing is the only option really.

of course, it is my personal opinion that it isn't interesting.

I couldn't agree with you more largestherb (it occurred to me the other day that I've been calling you "herb," which isn't actually your name - sorry about that slip). I've been cracking a bunch of houses lately and some have been really fun, like the one I described above & below (Mr. McDaniel). The broken ones are rather irritating though. They don't offer you a fair shot at figuring them out. It's simply: oh, you don't have 50k to blow on tools? Too bad!

For all of the houses I've robbed in the last couple of days, I've used only the $2000 starting funds (granted, sometimes several times over multiple scouting missions). Houses like Victor's are simply straight up impossible this way.

largestherb wrote:

You were right, he had apparently just gone back to fix things and change some of his security details. He'll need to change them again though, because I just killed his wife and made note of his updates. Hehehe... smile

I've got his entire house mapped out at this point. Though, a few minor tweaks here and there send me almost back to square one.

That was Dalleck's if it was.

Yes, that was the house. I counted the number of pits and it looks like I exaggerated the number of ladders the guy used. I remember there being more, but actually it was closer to 20k in ladders based on the Castle Fortify. That's still a lot though.

bey bey wrote:

Maybe he robbed a ladder store...

On a serious note: It was the Dalleck whose wife you exterminated. (I had the same issue with a window-thingee I thought was smart and it also cost me my wife a few days ago. hmm The best defense is pitbulls aligned to line of sight with pits or concrete, so it costs at least 1k to pass each one.

That may have also been me. I've used this tunneling trick on a few people now.

Houses don't necessarily need to appear for everyone at the same time ether. If someone appears to be pumping, the ten minute wait could increase by increments of a couple minuets to further reduce the effectiveness. This staggering the would also encourage other players to take the 2K before the offending individual, which I believe may be enough to render pumping ineffective all together, especially if the in game community is fairly active. Unfortunately, depending on the design of the game, this method may not be practical to implement, especially in comparison to the simple ten minute timer.

On a side note, the timer may also improve the games accessibility, by giving new players a chance to understand the structure of the game, before their house is immediately robed, though this is likely less of a concern, or may even run against the design goals.

I agree with this too. I like the idea of a short waiting period before a house goes up on the list.

On an unrelated note, if you rob someone's vault but their wife still has money, is their house still removed from the list? I just robbed someone and went back to get the wife using the proceeds from the robbery, but their house was gone?

I have a minor suggestion for a button that brings you back to the list of houses after you exit a burglary attempt. Currently there is only a button that brings you back to your house. I often want to return to the list directly. I am also curious if others have found themselves wishing for such a button or if this is just me.

There have been at least two seemingly unfair robberies that can't be legit lately, on Jere and Dalleck, meaning that a non-existent player got a ludicrous amount of cash together to steal a lot less money than he had gotten somehow, presumably by dual accounts.

I have definitely borne witness to the aftermath of one of these. I've been focusing on the robbery aspect of this game for the past day or so now, and have been scouting a bunch of houses lately. There was a player whose last name started with G (I'm terrible with remembering names) and I realized that his wife could likely be reached without too much cost due to the way he had placed his pit bulls. He had put them in niches in the wall and was using windows to improve their sight. This seemed like a great idea at first, but then I realized it meant I could drug them, tunnel around them with explosives (which was now cheap because of the window and empty spots in the niches), lure the next dog to the drugged dog, drug and repeat.

I decided to earn the funds to try this by cracking Mr. Smith (you're right I think, colorfusion, that having a non-trivial but not too hard house probably wards off total destruction by tools). I think I got something like $7000 from Mr. Smith after figuring his house out, which I used to buy meat and explosives and some other stuff I figured I might need or got in Mr. Smith's vault (can't leave it at home as I have no house) and returned to the original guy's house (Mr. G).

When I got there, I was shocked to find that someone had laddered over his entire place... I mean... a lot of ladders. It had to have been at least in the 50k or more range. They had robbed his vault, which was empty. I continued with my plan to try and get to his wife, which I did successfully (and then bombed some holes in a wall somewhere to use up remaining explosives - sorry Mr. G tongue). Anyway, I don't remember how much money he had had in his vault before being ladder-destroyed, but I doubt it was anywhere near enough to be worthwhile. Further, I don't remember seeing any formerly rich person be demoted on the list (after spending all that money on ladders). So I was sure wondering where this mystery ladderer had come from - seemingly appearing with a huuuge amount of ladders out of nowhere.

bey bey wrote:

I only put it there so that if somebody notices a top house having 100k instead of 30 or 50 for a quick moment, we might have a clue to what's going on.

Over the past month or so, I have also noticed several incidents in which a really rich house has suddenly shot up to the top of the list. Each time I'd wonder how on Earth they managed to accumulate so much money so quickly. However, I didn't pay attention to the names (like I said, I'm terrible with remembering names) so I don't know if it was the same person or different people. There are also legit ways to quickly acquire a bunch of money.

colorfusion wrote:

Maybe a 10 minute timer from the moment you start your life before your house is shown to others. If put time into making a legitimate house this shouldn't be much trouble, but it would make $2000 pumping a lot less efficient. Doesn't even have to be explained to the user since they can't see their house on the list, but fits in as your house being unknown to people, it's just been built and the news of a new robbing opportunity hasn't spread around yet.

I think this sounds like a great idea!

Yeah, I agree with everything everyone here has said so far. The concrete walls thing is really important in my opinion as well. When I'm scouting for an easy steal, one of the first things that catches my attention is if the house is all made out of wooden walls. If so, it's almost reflex for me to think "this one should be an easy target."

I agree with your point on playing getting less money than not playing; before the wage changes it used to be the opposite of this and, although grindy, I think it was better than a few not worth robbing houses and just building up money by offlining.

I have to agree that it is not desirable for the primary source of income to be offlining. I constantly find myself wanting to play this game, but being forced to sit and wait while I earn money; 90% of the game now takes place... outside the game. It feels like it has almost turned into a game about waiting lately. There is only one game ever invented (that I know of) that should be this way... and this game pretty much invented the "waiting" genre (and is pretty much the only game in the genre). That game is, of course, Progress Quest (and it's a truly awesome game - Wiki Article).

Anyway, my hope is that it gets better with more players, so hopefully this problem will go away if enough people join in.

I can imagine a scenario with limited tools, if every damage you do to a house is saved and you have to wait until you can penetrate the same house again. That means, you can carry n tools with you, and of course the owner will make his walls n+1 thick. But the clue is: if you try to rob that house and cut through n walls, the next robber will only have to cut one more wall and will get away with all the money you tried to rob so hard. So i suppose you wouldn't cut n walls. This would be quite interesting, because you would have to be careful with damaging a house.

I don't think this would be a good idea because then anyone could effortlessly rob any house. All you need to do is lay siege, retreat, commit suicide, restart, rinse and repeat. In fact, there have already been updates in previous versions to limit how many times damage to a house can be saved because of this sort of thing. Allowing damage to be saved without killing a family member or reaching a non-empty vault renders all houses impossible to protect.

I really wish we lived in a world where people would listen to other people's ideas and genuinely consider them on an intellectually honest level.

Instead we live in a world where some people become so consumed with personal disdain for those with ideas with which they disagree that they lash out in irrational ways at those people, blackballing and discriminating freely against them. Often they are not even aware of what they're doing, being blinded by hate and/or arrogance.

Until a few minutes ago I had never heard of Kunzelman, but reading his blog post has been a very depressing experience. sad

This guy is being unfair, hypocritical, and arbitrary in his criticisms of TCD.

It just sounds like he developed a passionate dislike for Jason on a personal level based on a few isolated comments taken from an interview that was only partially transcribed. Based on those comments he's extrapolated Jason into being some sort of ridiculous caricature. I don't know Jason, but I did read the comments section from the interview, and Jason clearly proves himself to be nothing like what Kunzelman unfairly pegs him as being. Furthermore, none of this has any bearing on the game itself. Kunzelman seems to be saying that he, as some sort of moral arbiter, has decided that Jason is not a good human being and therefore everyone needs to boycott his game. This is akin to book burning, and the fact that Kunzelman identifies as an "academic" is truly disturbing to me. sad

I will never understand how some people become so motivated by anger and/or frustration that they become utterly blind to their own close mindedness, but it seems to happen all the time throughout humanity. Just the thought of rebutting his post is exhausting since he makes so many poor judgments and unfounded accusations.

I have to give kudos to Jason for having such thick skin to withstand this kind of unfair treatment with such good nature.

I agree with this. I've never understood the elaborate but poorly defended houses. What's the point? I'd rather put the initial $2000 towards something that will be rock solid once complete, but defenseless in the meantime than something that takes a few hundred dollars and a little bit of thought to crack. However, the latter type of house is a great source of income for the rest of us!

This has been my strategy for the last couple of weeks, and it has seemed to work well. One problem I've experienced however, is the occasional intruder who comes not for the money, but for the kill. I've had people spend ~10k tearing down walls and gunning down dogs to kill my wife for a few thousand dollars. Then I just have to restart again.

It's what colorfusion said; the house was robbed and saved in this "broken" state. The vault isn't busted because that only happens after having been robbed twice. A little while after the first robbery, the house had earned more money and the vault was again non-empty. Once robbed a second time (by someone using drugged meat for example) the vault will appear busted and will stop earning money.

#71 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion: Fake Vault » 2013-07-24 16:36:22

A stairway tile that connected to different parts of your house would also be cool. It would act like a teleporter; you step into it not knowing where you'll emerge. It would need to be placed in pairs in the build mode. The house owner knows where each one leads.

#72 Re: Main Forum » Can I at least put a door in order to protect my family? » 2013-07-24 16:03:33

When it comes to family protection, there is really only one option: dogs. Pits and other traps work great for vault protection, but since you need a clear path for your family, they can't be used to protect them. One can concoct clever designs using them anyhow, but dollar for dollar these designs are always inferior to a simple pack of dogs. Each well placed dog costs an intruder $1000 to pass. Nothing else achieves that amount of protection per dollar.

Noshire wrote:

While pitbulls can be used in an efficient way to keep intruders away from your beloved, having some other means to defend them would add more tactical options, and lead to more elaborate designs than "long tunnel stuffed with dogs" or "cleverly placed, un-crowbarable dogs".

I think family protection is entirely feasible with the new animal movement rules in place. However, I do agree that there is a very limited degree of creativity afforded to the family protection aspect of this game as opposed to the vault protection aspect. It is possible to come up with creative family protection strategies, but they will not be effective.

gyuri wrote:

OK, you can't always protect your family, but how about stealing other people's wives?

Haha, this is a funny and also interesting idea, though it doesn't really seem to fit with the "feel" of the game to me.

#73 Re: Main Forum » I don't even know... » 2013-07-23 19:37:09

If you buy drugged meat, you can use it and then click on the dog, which will be highlighted if you are close enough to it when you use the drugged meat. The dog will then be asleep. At that point it will not chase you, but you still can't step on it without waking it up and dying.

Since dogs will following your movement once they've seen you, they can be used to do things. Suppose you see a dog behind a window at the other end of the screen. If you walk around, the dog will follow your movements as much as it can. This means that you can effectively pull the dog along some path, causing it to step on switches that may activate trap doors, power doors, or other security features. This is what the magic dance is all about. Since the dog that is following your movements will likely be behind many walls, you can't see where the switches are it needs to step on, so without getting back there to see, you have no way how knowing how you need to make the dog move. Hence it seems like the correct sequence of moves on your part is a magic dance.

#74 Re: Main Forum » Show me yours I'll show you mine. » 2013-07-23 19:26:35

Yeah, it could be two different people helping each other and/or working together. There is really no way to protect your house against that.
