No "automapping." If you want to remember where everything else was that you can't see from where you are, is, take your time and use castledraft (or the other one, I forget the name). Otherwise, I'm pretty sure we'll never see in-game mapping like that. Except for one thing: your memory.
The ones that really nail me now though, are the "stealth-wife" traps. "Oh, look, family went that-a-way... *checks seemingly non-related door, gets chest blown open by shotty* "How the hell did they get there???" *new life*
Have you maybe considered that it's a tactic to get everyone else's bounties up in hopes they'll later die in another one of their houses? I'll hit those 0/0/0 houses when I see 'em just to make 'em refresh the safe at the door.
Yeah, many of those have nailed me. My least favorites so far though are clock-based, and dog-follow-hitting-buttons-out-of-sight-based traps. Usually I spot those, and I'm out. Well, the dog-follow traps. Clock-based tend to sneak up on me.
And down the drain it went. Died in a house. Damn my curiosity. Whelp, least I know how to spot dog-cat commits now.
Eh, it's still easier to crack than it might look right now, but only if you have a clue what's ahead of you. Assuming I get the cash needed for more upgrades, that'll change soon enough though. Had one guy with a 1.1k bty die, 5th time scouting the place. Wasn't the 1st time he even saw the hazard (and avoided) that killed him that 5th time.
So, this life, while the wife&kids were offed early, I've got a nice little setup going (I think, anyway). About 5-6k into the house now, with just enough left over to go clubbing a few times.
Well, I didn't get it, got impatient and tried anyway. Time to start gearing up for watching some of my old sessions... figure I've got enough "omg why didn't I see that?" material to review and learn from.
Anyone happen to have a guess at the combo?
Yes I'm asking, so shoot me
AND another one... Just died to a wife-intercept trap... I REALLY need to get better at spotting those.
It had been broken, when I last dared the house. Just checked, and it's not broken this time. Though there is another house out there, I forget the name right now, that IS broken. Dead kid/wife at the door, pitbull one space away, straight ahead from you. 1-step-death if you don't drug/shoot the dog before stepping into the house.
Back on track...
Well, had a few of those today... There was the bug(I suspect, reported anyway)-related loss of my first 9k house attempt... Then after that I got another lucky heist, not quite as good as the earlier 8k I'd gotten (spent 1k on tools... only wound up needing 300 worth of that). That one ended to a failed self-test involving cross-circuiting a section of electric floors (whoops). I think I spent a good minute staring at the screen... and trying to figure out just wtf caused it. And then there was the most recent: another good haul, finally got a house working as intended. Still kinda in the "disbelief" part... though it has one kill so far. But has been upgraded from loot already.
Hey, if someone with 100k wants to use it to brute a house with no where near that value, that's their waste of time. Granted, all the tools they use might've been donated by the deceased... But it's not about keeping them away yet, it's about keeping the empty house 2kers from getting to it.
I'll have to pull the recording to watch, but I do think it was "that" Mcintyre. Thank the bug gods you got such an easy haul.
Also, fyi, the design I was busy working on should've been completely impossible to brute-force with 2k, and probably would've been a benign looking death-trap to anyone going past the front door... Oh well. Too bad most of the houses are all chilled right now. At least the ones worth trying to scout for that much again.
No, wasn't me. Same person hit the vault, and came back and hit the wife. Or was it the other way around? Only had 2 tapes, both the same name.
Oh, and to Jason Rohrer... Fix that disco timer!
edit: I should also note that right before going idle, I did a self-test, moved around to pan the screen both in test and in build mode...
You lucky SOB. The game disco'd me while working. I had a 4 minute timer going next to me, set it immediately before going "idle" to work in castle draft. Come back to the game window with 1 minute to spare... Disco screen. Grrrrrrr....
Hmm... Might nab that design into my next house... I could really for having a cash-farm like that
Haven't had anything that huge happen, though I did have a nice wife-kill to my belt on the last house I had... then I died in someone else's house (one I should've known better about too... only the 4th or 5th time that design has killed my exploring ass...). I really need to just stop robbing when I have a comfortably built house...
I thought when a robber goes through, wrecks your place after killing your family for less money than the tools they brought could sell for, then hits your vault, was fairly clear communication between the two players...
Wasn't me, but he'd made a few pokes into my most recent house.
I love and hate that feeling when you misstep and your heart skips a beat, then that COLD COLD feeling .. "oh... it's finito... no way..... no.... no.. " That leads to anger. And walking away from the computer for 20 minutes.
Ontopic, yes. I hate myself doing it. Added a bitlock last night and worked nice. Changed the entrance. Say code was 1 and 2 out of 6. I pressed 6 and 5 because i moved entrance to it backwards. SILLY SILLY me..
Yup, done that a few times now, actually. Though one time I screwed myself when updating the code, not due to getting the code wrong, but due to having failed to reset the final section of flooring that had been triggered by the panic button when the wife got killed. Cleaned up the bodies, fixed everything else... Whoops.
Ugh. Had something similar happen last round. Somehow I'd "back-wired" the final defense layer... having it only powered from the "outside" of the vault, rather than inside as well... Still was funny considering the guy who pointed it out during the robbery only got $42 total... after killing the wife and using a saw. Wasted 2k life. So, the design is fixed now. Still not sure how some of the internal power wiring disappeared though. could swear it was there when I did the self-test...
Thanks for the tip. I'm still figuring out all the various pet interaction nuances. Though I did come up with a particularly nasty dog-lock-the-vault-commit-gate a few houses back, killed quite a few people with that one. Then I borked a self-test and was forced to waste money re-buying defense items after having put the house on safety... then died to other stupidity/not paying attention moments.
Well, as I keep refining/rebuilding various designs I've come up with, I'm starting to learn how to plan ahead better, so I can build up the defense layers around the combination/access route to become cost-prohibitive. And while I'm not 100% sure yet (there's always that one thing that doesn't get thought of until you see it happen to you...) that my 2k starting designs are impenetrable by any possible 2k tool loadout. Does kind of skimp on the wife though. But since so many people seem to get off on wife-killing (I've been scouted then wife-killed for less than a club's resale value), I figure why waste the cash on building up family defenses. If they survive, well, there's always the bait traps along their path... Or at the very least guaranteed death if they manage to get close enough to kill the wife/kids unless they want to blow 12+k... But I doubt I'll be seeing my house get that advanced for some time yet... damn stupid deaths.
