Re: Tips Page

During tape playback, while the visibility shroud is off and the tape is stopped, you can use WASD or arrow keys to scroll around the map and inspect all parts of the house.

Re: Tips Page

If there's a chihuahua at your feet, you can move up without danger of a pitbull attacking you (as long as you don't actually step ON a pitbull).  This works in other directions as well, depending on where the pitbull is - see Contention on this page

Re: Tips Page

You can press '=' at any time to save a screen shot into the screenShots folder.

You can press '+' during editing or tape playback to save an image of the entire map into the mapShots folder.

A push door isn't safe to open if the pitbull behind it has already seen you.

Re: Tips Page

Not so much a discovery, but keeping a text file open with house names and progress on them helps greatly.

Re: Tips Page

Try to imagine drugged pit bulls as powered electric floors, it will help you avoid countless stupid deaths.

Re: Tips Page

You (and other robbers) can see what's one tile behind a closed door, so leave a space behind it to keep your surprises a surprise.  You can use this to your advantage as a robber as well - if you can see the shape of a dog or wall behind a door, don't even open it!!!

You can actually, just barely, see what's 3 tiles behind a closed door. You'll need to modify the image though:

EDIT (by Jason):
This has been fixed in v25 so that you can only see 1 tile beyond a closed door, even if you amp the gamma.  Further than 1 tile beyond a wall is now pure black on the screen with no visual information present. (See this thread)

The sequence of movements computed at each step. It took me some time and tests (and some deaths) to figure out, for example, which is the direction chosen by escaping family members if they have a choice (up-down-left-right) or if the wife can pick-up the shotgun and shoot at the same step.

Re: Tips Page

One I discovered on my first house design: if you're making commit gates, use STICKY pressure pads.

Were you the one who made a maze style house with a shotgun wife and not all that many traps in it, and a commit gate followed by all dead ends?

That sounds a pretty like my house, though mine doesn't have all dead ends, just most of them. wink

Re: Tips Page

Although this amuses me every time, I'm going to let some of you guys in on a secret.

If you're standing in a house where the electronics seem to be running on some kind of clock, do not stand on a powered trap door and attempt to use a tool. No, not even if there's a pitbull one space behind you about to eat your face.

I did a nothing-to-lose tool-less run through a house like that, got to the safe and stole under $500 when I should have been dead. I imagine after watching me on the tape backtrack right over their commit gate and go on to grab the safe, they'd never make that mistake again.

So even though animals don't move when you use a tool anymore, electronics still update?

Correct. If you water an electric floor, for example, the electronics will be recalculated and you will see the floor as off before you move.

I believe clock based electronics step each time the electronics are calculated, so using a tool steps those too.

Re: Tips Page

I wonder if anyone's told anyone this - But I would suggest people tell their friends to use the 2k they get to start with and try to rob someones house with tools. That way, money gets distributed if they die, or if they miraculously succeed. I did this, and started building a house at 20+ thousand dollars, cause I bumbled through someones house.

The fact that people build a house with the 2k, and rob random low costing houses, means that they will never gain money the easy way (Letting people into your maze to die) and will keep dying while on jobs. So why not go all in? In for a penny in for a pound, as they say in Ireland. (Yes, that's if you're going to get jailed for stealing a penny, why not go for a pound)

you can kind of prevent people from having very easy/repeatable exploration of your house with something like this http://castledraft.com/editor/O3UGnP

doggy commit gates are probably one of the most effective.

That's true insofar as people don't return with a doorstop- and poorer robbers often don't.

Re: Tips Page

I still see that as 1 water to get back just like a standard electric floor-sticky button-battery. You could stand on the sticky and water the battery. Of course thats AFTER you have explored down that path.

Re: Tips Page

DethBringa: The idea is that you have a trap later down that path that requires deactivation "outside" (Before) the commit gate, for example more powered doors or trapdoors. If they do things in wrong order:

1: They can short the battery, go back, deactivate further trap, and then they would have need to use a ladder (1800$) to continue on the path.
2: They can Jimmy the door or button, but that would require a crowbar (2400$).
