Steam keys?

The game key I received for direct purchase won't validate on Steam. Is this going to change or will we receive different keys for Steam activation? Also, any timeline expectations on that being done?

With that said, I assume that all players are accessing the same default central server anyway, right?

Re: Steam keys?

Yes, everyone plays on the same default server. Unless you use the games source code to start your own server which Jason has information about here:

Are you talking about the download key that's the password to login?  In that case, no.  You should've gotten an email telling you how to get the steam key, but if you didn't, you could go to your download page and get it there.

Re: Steam keys?

I never got my download link nor Steam key. I really want The Castle Doctrine and have paid the $12 for it. It'd be nice to actually get it.

Re: Steam keys?

No bother.

My initial purchase was bounced back, my refund will get to me in a couple of days. I went ahead and bought the Steam version. Whole 'lotta jumpin' through hoops to get this game. Better be damn good.

Re: Steam keys?

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I'm not 100% sure how the whole web purchase side of things works but I think the steam system should be pretty much instant access.
Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of the community.

I got my code, but not the "email". When I put in my own email, it says "login failed".

Re: Steam keys?

Odd. You are talking about the initial purchase not the steam one I guess.

Yes. I've reached the conclusion that there no "DRM-free" nor "open source" version of this game.
Nice false advertising, folks.

Re: Steam keys?

It is DRM-free and open source but you need to be online to play the game im sure it will get sorted out for you, you just have to give it some time. Im sure Jason is very busy today being that it release day on steam..

Re: Steam keys?

Yea, keep in mind also: he is one guy. It's not a game made by 200+ people with a support staff. I'm almost certain he's overwhelmed right now.... he was supposed to post about the contest results yesterday but no word on it.

He's said here before he'd give refunds to anyone who wasn't happy with the game, so I wouldn't worry about getting treated unfairly.

If it requires internet to play it, then it's not "DRM-free" or "open source". Because you still need a server staring up your ass to play it.

Re: Steam keys?

So then ALL MMO's have DRM and with it being described as "a massively-multiplayer game of burglary and home defense by Jason Rohrer " would indicate exactly that. In my understanding a game that is not an MMO and has to be connected for anti-piracy was a DRM game.
I could be wrong, I quite often am.

Re: Steam keys?

You can run your own server if you'd like. You could even charge money for people to get on your server if you really wanted.

Re: Steam keys?

That is not the definition of DRM-free. It's a multiplayer online game and clearly labeled as such so needing an internet connection shouldn't be a surprise. The source code is included so I think it qualifies as open source as well.

The game is completely open source and DRM free. You do need your account to connect to Jason's server, but you could even set up your own server with just the files you downloaded if you wanted.

Make sure your email is typed completely correct as you put it when you were buying the game. For example if you used name@gmail.com then name@googlemail.com or section.name@gmail.com won't work.

Jasons' pretty frequent on these forums, although he's likely overwhelmed right now with steam launch and contest end.

You don't actually even need an internet connection if you run your own server I believe. It should be fairly obvious that connecting to a server for an MMO requires an internet connection, especially as it is specifically stated in the requirements.

DRM doesn't just mean you need an account, or an internet connection for an MMO. Open source has nothing to do with requiring or not requiring an internet connection.

yes.. you need internet to play an online game.

the source code is available on the download page and there is absolutely no copyright on any of the game content. there is no digital rights management.. as.. yeah, jason is not claiming any rights over the content. it is freely available for all to use as they see fit.
