Hey! And Kotaku picked this up:

So.... there should be 67 new people playing the game today, so far....

Very cool!

I really liked this. It has a more lighthearted tone than I expected, a "gee whiz" flavor to it, but that's cool. I tried sharing it on reddit, but I'm the king of 0 upvotes for things I submit.

Well.... you know, I'm just an upbeat kinda guy, and I have a dark sense of humor. I tried to let my voice fall a bit in that video when he comes home to find his wife killed and vault empty, but I could only make that down-tone last for a few seconds.
But yeah, lots of people are surprised by this. Because of my games, they expect me to be all gloomy. Like, you know, I bought a mausoleum in a graveyard and live there or something!
When I was growing up, my father was often worried about dying, and one year, he had a particularly worrisome health concern (which turned out later to be a false alarm---he's still alive and well 25 years later). At the breakfast table one morning, he announced, "Kids, I'll be dead by Christmas."
To my sister and I, who both have a perverse sense of humor, this brought to mind a coffin under our Christmas tree with a big red ribbon on it. Merry Christmas, Dad's dead. We were literally rolling on the floor laughing about this for years, whenever we'd think of it. "Kids, I'll be dead by Christmas." And we still laugh about it to this day.
I don't think most people get it. Well, maybe it's a bit Python-esque ("Bring out your dead!"), so perhaps we have some company....

The video is pretty solid. I think it conveys a lot of information about how the game actually works (kinda like a tutorial) while also expressing the special, sad, vengeful, frustrating, and triumphant thing that it is. And it's nice and short. With this video posted on Kotaku, I'm sure there will be many more people playing.
It makes me think you should consider doing some proper tutorial videos, cuz I like the style and it would be helpful for new players.
Also, hearing the music at the end of the video instantly makes me think of the game. It's been branded into my mind.
The "dead by christmas" anecdote is hilarious.. mostly because he didn't die.

LOL, that's a nice story.
But where are all those players?! After a few weeks away I decided to build a house again but when going out on the block I noticed that there's not all that much going on now. Still, though, there's a few quite robbable houses now and I'd say the balance has improved massively. Scouting is possible with smarts, and the mistakes made are your own mistakes. That's a very good improvement.

Well, we had 280 people buy the game over the past 7 days (since the trailer was posted), which is pretty huge.

Hasn't that like, DOUBLED the user base?

There are definitely lots of new people - if I got a coke every time somebody stepped on a drugged dog I'd be sailing on a brown ocean.

Haha yes I've seen a LOT of people learning doggy mechanics the hard way. I did it too when learning, and you only do it once. And the other one that makes me laugh is when they pour water on an electric floor which is powering the trap door they're standing on.

Yup. I also learned this way in v5 or so, before the inevitability of the magic dance came about. I just imagine how frustrating it must be to start now: Your house gets raped immediately while you can only take one or two steps in a house before being killed. The curve has become a lot steeper.

Yes, but at least there seems to be a fair number of beginner houses on the second page of houses for people to learn with, using more transparent traps like dog mazes, rather than behind the scene magic. These should be good for learning the core game mechanics and building confidence.

What's with the new version of the trailer?

It's pretty depressing, compared to the old version which someone uploaded here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szd2EsyuYWA

LOL. Oh my, that is hilarious in context. I think this is mausoleum-Jason coming out.
If I didn't know better, I'd say it was a joke. While listening to this, it sounds like Jason is having a hard time with the depressing voice.

Hmm... I see that Jason posted it to twitter with no amount of sarcasm. Nothing wrong with having 2 trailers (A/B testing!!!), but i do prefer the other one.

BTW: I made a new version of the trailer that's even MORE depressing! Enjoy! (Jason, if you want to use it, go right ahead. It seems you're really embracing that "I live in a mausoleum" motif, so I guess I saved you some work).

The old trailer rubbed a lot of people the wrong way as being tonally off.
I know that a lot of YOU get the dark humor that is an aspect of this game (and even an aspect of the real-life stuff that I faced). But a lot of other people can't see the humor in serious things.
Not that the old trailer was meant to be humorous, but it had a light-hearted tone, which is the one that I generally always use, because I'm a light-hearted person.

Lmao. The first one was really chipper. But now I'm laughing even harder XD

I really liked the first one. This new one seems so... off. Yeah, the game is dark, but it's supposed to be fun, not depressing.

The new trailer is not good, don't know what you were thinking. Is it really necessary to change the original trailer just because of some bad feedback? There will always be some people that don't like something.
However the new trailer is not good at all, it's just a slowed down unenthusiastic version of the first. The pace on the first one was perfect at keeping your attention, the new one is a snooze fest.

For some serious criticism of the new trailer, it sounds like Jason just read the script from the old trailer, substituting a few lines as you went. In particular, the "It looks like it already happened, because as you were exploring the neighborhood..." line just completely sounds wrong in that tone of voice. And nobody on Kotaku seemed to take issue with the trailer.

I wonder of some of the Great Internet Castle Doctrine Backlash of Late July was triggered by the tone in the first trailer.
I don't know...
