Re: The Contest

Depending on the actual price of the paintings, you could probably use the money you won to buy your own.

Re: The Contest

Yes. I was considering that. Won't be quite as cool if it wasn't a prize in the contest though. hmm

Re: The Contest

I see the game uses nicknames. I cannot see my name in the list, or anywhere else. Is there a way to know who I am?

Nope. It's all anonymous. You'll never know unless someone else tells you.

Re: The Contest

My understanding of the contest rules is that if I have a house that has been on the market and edited (active for several days so I meet both of those requirements) and I am still alive at 5PM PST today the robbable value of my house will be counted and converted to USD.  Based on this understanding I think that if I were to hide my house for the last half of the day by walking around and admireing my house in edit mode it would still be counted in the final tally.  Is this correct?

I'd like to run and hide from the last minutes of the competition but I don't want to risk being removed from the list of eligible houses.

Confirmation?

Re: The Contest

As I understand it a snapshot of houses on the list will be taken. If your house is not on the list i.e. You are camping in it, then you house will not be shown and therefore will not be eligible. I could be wrong tho.

Re: The Contest

I think a bunch of us feel the same way, but I don't know that we've heard official word on that. It was asked in another thread but no answer.

Closest I've heard is: "One top player has had his house checked out for edit for 3 hours.  I'm going to figure out how to deal with that soon."

Re: The Contest

It may just be how I interpreted "At 5pm, I will take a snapshot of the server database to "freeze" the state of the game world safely for study offline. "

Re: The Contest

I dunno, Deth. I'm hoping you're taking "the list" a little too literally. If it was that way, you'd get screwed for just happening to be legitimately playing the game and editing/browsing your house at 5pm.

I'd guess this is a hard rule to establish because there's no clear cut difference between someone editing and camping. I'm sure I've edited for several hours before.

Re: The Contest

Well I thought it was a literal statement, I could be wrong, but with the time stated it just means that for that period of time everyone should make sure their house is available.

Re: The Contest

Nothing like a real money contest to make you extremely paranoid. I currently have six paintings and I'm considering buying another, in an effort to keep my net worth below the perceived $30,000 'screw it, tool up and take him' threshold.

Funny thing is, the vast majority of people who enter my house die on the one of the first three traps (<3 doggy death doors ... and powered doors ... and trap doors ... y'know, doors in general). I don't think any of the 80-odd kills I've had since Saturday has penetrated more than half way to my vault yet, but I just don't want to risk the possibility. I'm now relying on chills to keep me safe until 1am.

I don't think that is the case, since houses being robbed don't show up on the list.  In that case, you could just rob the #1 house at 4:55 to stop him from getting anything =P

That being said, I wonder if a ban on editing your house an hour or 30 minutes before the contest would be a good idea... it would prevent camping in your house, but also being able to change it to better defend it...

Re: The Contest

I've lost my house to self-test yesterday; I somehow managed to climb above $5000 with rudimentary house today but I am wondering if I should spend money to install new trap I'm sure will catch many people off-guard or just sit with my money and hope current design will be enough to defend my money for four more hours.

(Another factor to consider is that I died two times in self-test trying to confirm the safety of that trap... that's after I used chiwawa and indicator lights to test run it just before. I guess I should build it if I happen to reach $10000, regardless.)

After a robbery that left me at 80k, I accidentally removed the power to a trapdoor I needed to pass to reach my safe.  After frantically thinking up every possible way to escape alive somehow, after 5 minutes I finally landed on a insane plan that actually worked, and I made it out alive big_smile  It was one of the most exhilarating moments from any game I've played smile

Re: The Contest

I imagine there'll be a lot of players running down the list of houses, with $2,000 worth of tools, looking for a $5-10,000 score before 1am. Chills only affects one house at a time, and you're looking at a good 50 houses at least before there's not enough money to be worth the try. So I'd recommend defending, and raking in money on the tools.

My wife was brutally bludgeoned this morning, and in traditional fashion I surrounded her battered corpse with pits to preserve it for all eternity. So far, no less than five people have walked into said pits. Two with copious amounts of tools. This is the level of player you're defending yourself from wink

Re: The Contest

Unfortunately when I stuff up its fatal, too many commit circuits and no back-out traps. I learnt the hard way to disable everything except what I'm testing, then go back through from vault to entrance enabling and testing each one.

Well, Lopez. I don't think I get past you at this point. Here's to hoping there aren't too many campers above us.

Re: The Contest

Thanks to a certain Mr. Finn, who just gave me new chances in the contest with a nice $25,000 "donation". Sorry about the pit bull to the face, but you fell into my trap so perfectly that you deserved it!

Re: The Contest

I'm actually happy where I am atm. I'm not in the top 8 (altho I have been there a few times) But the cash I will receive when the timer hits 0 is fine. I'm not greedy.
I should be safe for 2 reasons.
1. I'm not a threat to being in the top 8 (I think those people in the top 10 will soon be targeting each other).
2. Scary house prevents a lot of people venturing too far, and I've already had so many deaths that I will be on chills timer for a lot of people.

Re: The Contest

Is it just me, or did people stopped robbing each other? Perhaps people took a defensive position as the contest is about the end.

Snagging $1k is only about $1. Not worth risking your entire savings for most people.

More seriously, I was worried about what this contest would do to people...  sorry about that!

But SO many people have discovered the game because of it.
