A good number of top houses are "camping" here near the end in an endless editing session.
Obviously, there will be a nasty surprise for many people if those houses appear at the end and win.
So, I'm going to do something DRASTIC.
I'm going to turn the editing time out DOWN from 5 minutes down to 3 minutes. This will mean that the auto-ping the client sends at four minutes will be too late to keep the house checked out. This will obviously only affect PUBLIC houses and not houses that are still having their very first edit.
SO... if you need to do a REAL edit on a public house, make it quick, people!
I'll see what effect that has, and may need to implement another measure later, which I will post here.

So basically, if we take more than 3 minutes editing, we get kicked out of our house with no edits? Does that include self-tests?

A tad late =/

jeez lousie! i just had to spend 45 minutes planning and making a house. seems to be safe

Good thing I got too afraid to make change a few hours ago.
Does that include self-tests?
This is quite important, right? You get timed out of an edit, you lose your changes. But timed out of a self test would mean death right?

AHHHHHHH that would explain why I was panicking about being in the top 8 and I'm now down the list quite far and feeling safe again. Over a page of houses just appeared from nowhere.
If I vanish it's not due to a burglar shooting me as well as my wife while making his way to the vault....
I'm just a burst player.

Okay, so the way it actually works is that owner pings are blocked for houses that have already been edited and gone public.
This means that your client will give you about 4 minutes to do your edit before it sends a ping and that ping fails.
And, because your house is unpingable while you're in it, you will eventually be kicked out of it by the server (between 5 and 7 minutes after you started editing it, depending on when the flush happens). Of course, your client will likely bail because of the failed ping at 4 minutes, unless you are going back and forth to self-test too, which makes your client wait longer until trying to ping.
Also, this DOES NOT affect first edits!

Oh... and I'll make the cops faster to respond too, just to really heat things up.

What about edits that take a long time?
For example, when I start a new game the first thing I do is spend $2k on tools and try to make it back (plus some) with a big heist. THAT's when I start to actually construct my home defense. How will that style of play be affected? It sounds like I am going to have to keep hitting "Done" then self-test, then rush to go back into edit mode before someone can enter my house, and repeat this process every several minutes. Is that about right?

For the next 40 minutes or so, sounds like.
Here's a question for you. When you've exited the house with tools in your backpack, those are removed from your vault right? So if I was to load up to with every kind of tool imaginable, leave the house, pop back in five minutes to reset the timer, leave the house, pop back ...
Well, wouldn't that give me an abnormally low valuation, up until I drop all the tools back in the safe in 35 minutes time?
Offline
I THINK that the tools are only considered truly "out" of your vault when you enter someone else's house and bring them with you. Otherwise they're just queued up to be taken out but still in your vault. I could be wrong but that's my understanding.
EDIT:
OH WAIT is this change only temporary for the final few minutes of the contest? I must have misunderstood that part.

I'm absolutely sure Gurrola has been camping... his house just popped up for a second with 280k, and had disappeared by the time I was back. The telling thing was that I had chills in his house - I haven't died in any houses for a while, so the time he spent camping has delayed the clock quite a bit.

are people hiding in other starter houses now ? i started a new life and cant get into the house.

Iceman: Is that how chills work? That explains why I keep getting names popping up on the list that are still chilled when I haven't died in over 48 hours.
Offline
i don't think we can go home any more. my freshly started house has 'you are being robbed' directly after suicide

I believe that's what Jason said here
Also, Perez is back?!?! I was sure he had died

Probably a side effect of the 5 minute rule Jason just implemented... it's probably not checking to see if you died since you were last in your house =P You should try again in 5 minutes

It looks like we are locked out of our houses (even on new lives) for 5 minutes.

"Your house is currently being robbed. You can't work on it now."
Those robbers sure are clever. Leave a note saying I'm being robbed, so I have to wait outside dutifully and they can come back at their leisure.

There's also another interesting side effect, in that you can't chain rob people without a five minute wait. Because you can't go stock up on tools.

We need tools though

I'm trying to buy a painting (wanted to wait for the price to go down) and am currently in the top 8. Is there any way I can access my house? I seem to be perma locked out of it, lol

Oh wait, looks like I just got in! I bought the speech bubble painting, hope no one robs me

This is kind of ruining the fun of the game for newcomers. I can't really build a perfect house on my first try, and had been trying to test with chihuahuas and light panels. This forces you to leave your house "undefended" for 5 minutes if you test something out. Could you maybe make it only apply to people with more than $2000?

If the sunset picture went down 20k, I'd buy it in a heartbeat =P
