Re: The Contest

Oh man, what a rollercoaster. Someone stole 240kish from me in the last 5 min! I got an email from jason saying i was the top house and somehow lost all my money at 4:55pm, i was so scared with all that cash, knew i would have a big target on my back.

Its kind of weird seeing a contest change game design rules with no prior warning at the last hour though, especially used as a crutch for the game design... not the fault of the contestant.

I tried robbing a house quickly after and died in the process, mix of shortened robbing timers & stress, oh well. Kudos though jason, you made an awesome game, honestly, haven't had a game wrench me this much for awhile... too stressful -- going to stop for a bit and breathe some fresh air! Congrats to all the winners!

Re: The Contest

Assuming this is still correct, I finished 4th with $120k. I have Redface by Phil Fish... pretty funny that one, considering that IIRC he would have painted it before leaving the games industry.

Someone stole 240kish from me in the last 5 min!

Wow. I was wondering how that part happened. Still.... maybe they knew about it before but were waiting until the last minute to go in for the kill. 5 minutes doesn't seem like nearly enough time to figure out the top house.

Re: The Contest

*coughs* if you look at your tapes and it was someone with 8 bricks and 8 meat.. might have been me.

the siren's came on at the end and the last 30 seconds of the robbery were frantic screaming and TWO VERY lucky guesses!

edit: however in the excitement, i forgot about the 5 minute lock once you leave your house..

and i .. might've left all that money in an empty house by mistake. *chokes* (you're welcome iceman lopez)

That was stressful and hilarious in the best way. Where the hell did Gurralo appear and disappear from?

Re: The Contest

Well, I just thought it would be weird if all the top 8 players were camping at the very end, and then, SURPRISE!  Here are the winners, and you haven't seen them all day!

Before I implemented this, the top player (#1) Gurrola literally had not been robbed at all for 24 hours.  No robber had set foot in that house.  I figured that wasn't right.

Regarding this being a flaw in the game design, normally, most people aren't motivated to camp like this.  Normal behavior was distorted by the specific deadline of the contest.

The max total house value ever seen during the contest was:  $3,092,704

The final exchange rate was:  $1 USD for every $1030 game dollars.  So, essentially, everyone who had at least $1030 will win at least $1 USD.

More soon....

Oh, it was YOU I robbed!  And Thomas must've clubbed the wife for the other 120k... oh wow, that must have sucked.

Oh, and I finally realized that Thomas's wife will never reach the entrance, because there's a child in the way, out of sight somewhere... nice job thinking of that wink

Re: The Contest

haha i totally messed up. i doubt i could've even thrown together a good façade in the last 3 minutes but i wanted to logout and log back in so that my house was at least checked in once with the money. and then, ahem. yeah the 5 minute lockout smile

the 24 hour chills was interesting, particularly as i only downloaded the v30 client today after a long break from the game. unsure how sustainable it might be, but it certainly added a strange twist to today smile

You sure spooked me when you started suggesting that my wife was ripe for a shooting.

I'm afraid your 850 steps didn't even set the record for most time spent waiting for her, that dubious honour goes to Robert Charles Smith with 2853 steps. How he didn't accidentally step on the grid I don't know!

Lol, someone was desperate...

Don't know if you'll believe me, but since I wasn't sure who it was, or if they knew who they were, I was planning on waiting until I saw her, then shoot a dog beside her.  Just to prove a point =P

Actually, I got the painting and 115k, and ukuko got another 115k.  He made a mistake and left his house undefended, with 230k... it didn't last long wink  Also, kudos on being a good sport - although I promised myself I wouldn't rage if I lost everything, I'm not sure what I would've done if I actually had.

Re: The Contest

Hi Everyone, it's been a while since posting here (several months). I received an email about the contest maybe a week or so ago and decided to head on over to the forums to check it out. Congrats to the winners (though I don't know who you are yet).

The paintings prize is especially cool. Great idea Jason. If I had bothered to check things out sooner, I might have tried to take a stab at the contest just to try and win a painting! I'd love to hang my favorite one on my wall... I guess there is technically nothing stopping me from having it printed myself, but it wouldn't be as awesome as winning one.

I downloaded the latest version last night and played around a bit. Several changes since I last played, most notably the wife now has a shotgun! One thing that confused me was the chill length. I seem to be permanently locked out of houses I've died in. Are chills indefinite now? Last time I played, they were only an hour.

Anyway, congrats again to the winners. I'll have to look around the forums a bit and maybe try my hands at the game tonight.

Ah, so that was you! That was an unfortunate incident, for sure.

If it's any consolation I've died on the self test in that house design at least 10 times.

haha, i would've loved the watermelon painting. alas i did a silly.

however, that was one of the most tense and crazy robberies i have pulled off in a very long time. i don't think i've turned $2000 into $240,000 before!

Okay, so that everyone can sleep tonight, here are the preliminary results for the top 8:

.

+----------------+-----------------------+-----------+--------------+
| value_estimate | character_name | USD_prize | gallery |
+----------------+-----------------------+-----------+--------------+
| 330000 | Jeffrey_William_Mccoy | 320.3883 | 2133 |
| 250000 | Andrew_Curtis_Thomas | 242.7184 | 2094#2098 |
| 200000 | David_Travis_Lopez | 194.1748 | 2043#2040... |
| 130000 | Hector_Vance_Bradley | 126.2136 | 2011 |
| 110000 | Charles_Carl_Perez | 106.7961 | 2123 |

+----------------+-----------------------+-----------+--------------+

Notice that poor Worley doesn't have a painting.  That means that #9 gets a painting instead:

.
+----------------+--------------------------+-----------+---------+
| value_estimate | character_name | USD_prize | gallery |
+----------------+--------------------------+-----------+---------+
| 82000 | Andrew_Richard_Whitfield | 79.6117 | 2142 |

I hope to have the full results written up tomorrow.

Re: The Contest

I hope the chill hour is kept at 24 hours, or maybe 12 hrs, to be decreased under consideration if the number of houses decrease once again. I've come across number of houses I would have been able to beat with starter kit had I been allowed to try the same house multiple times.

It also allows housekeepers to visit only once a day to switch things around if necessary, instead of having to check in consistently to prevent repeat-offenders from robbing everything in single day.
