Such cool paintings!  Thank you for bringing these back from the abyss and into play.

my robs from yesterday, all should have had enough time to fix weakpoints or change serious things.

Some robs i knew the layout or trap from before.

Bravo!

Hanging on the doormat means user disconnect - no robber movement file was sent.  No idea about Ramsay the 2nd guy.  Congratulations on your windfall, quite a rush to have the stakes increase out of nowhere like that!

#30 Re: Main Forum » Self test vs Robbery. » 2014-03-04 02:02:17

I think self tests are more dangerous than robberies, because houses grow more and more complex and nawrsty as they develop.

I think you should take a piecemeal approach to your house addons - work on whatever you consider "one piece" and add it to the house, master it, and self test it.  Now it's locked in and you can do the next part.  Take a (mandatory) break in edit mode, not out on the street!  You could also do up your entire masterpiece outline in wood, then go back and, ahem, weaponize it, and then upgrade the walls as money continues to flow in from your early traps.

Gah, It's true, I barged on in and complimented the wrong person for the wrong thing, which is super awkward.  sad

I mistook the esteemed JoyofTrapping for that other fellow who is more prolific and names each pitbull.

I went back and watched all of JoyofTrapping's videos again.  I had studied "Tunnelhell part 1" previously when trying to learn more about electrics, but didn't note the author.

I especially enjoyed this music video.

#32 Re: Main Forum » Neighborhood view » 2014-03-03 19:33:42

I like these ideas.

A player's (un-modded) default view of the 8 houses in their price range has a powerful effect on the way the game plays out.

Scrolling through those lists is hurting my index finger more and more as the neighborhood population increases.

I would love to be able to search a number and GOTO a page with houses of that value!

I admire your tenacity.  Good luck to you!  smile

Mister JOT, I am a huge fan of your YT videos and would recommend them for anyone interested in learning the game.

I was shouting at the monitor when you left a wooden wall wired "that one time".

#36 Re: Main Forum » So this happened... » 2014-03-03 17:45:40

I usually buy two dogs to start, and wait for a shotgun until my first income.

#37 Re: Main Forum » So this happened... » 2014-03-03 17:40:29

Murderers tend towards bringing clubs, guns, and dog meat, in lieu of saws.  If the wife has a shotgun, that leaves $800 to reach her.   If it takes at least two guns to get to the family, they're safe from most kamikaze attacks.

Edit: spelling

#38 Re: Main Forum » So this happened... » 2014-03-03 17:31:56

In my opinion, your vault is second in importance to your family; it can be replenished.   I challenge you to adjust your focus with your next starting house.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Tips Page » 2014-03-03 17:06:21

To help clarify wife money handling rules, I lifted this (whee!) from a General thread on the subject and I think this is how it goes currently:

The wife gets half of the total money, even-steven, every time you return home and either edit something OR buy/sell tools.  This re-division does not happen if you return home to buy paintings but don't edit the house or buy/sell tools.

After that, while you are away, the wife gets bounties from any robbers that SHE kills directly with the shotgun.  Other bounties (from deaths elsewhere in the house), plus tools from all dead robbers, are added to the vault.

There are currently no salaries paid, and I don't think that's going to change.

#41 Re: Main Forum » Jackass or idiot, which one is it? » 2014-03-03 15:46:15

Perhaps bounty increases-per-murder should be reduced OR or start small, and increase arithmetically to limit the max bounty generated by a $2k kamikaze.

Edited to add:

These are the people in your neighborhood
in your neighborhood
in your neigh-bor-hoo-ood
These are the people in your neighborhood
When you're walkin' down the street
they're the people that you meet
they're the people that you meet each day.

I observed these two canoodling by a fountain near the hotel.  Scandalous!

Robbers who bring 2k in tools will either bring an even number of bricks, or no bricks, because it's the only tool ending in 50.

Keep this in mind when you add windows to your house.

#44 Re: Main Forum » A little idea than could make the game a little more fun, maybe? ;) » 2014-03-03 14:32:34

I like this idea, it seems feasible and doesn't impact gameplay.  Might be two different separate tasks to implement for "mobiles" as opposed to "tiles".

I suggest that such information only be displayed to the house owner while in build mode -- A robber couldn't reasonably know pitbull names and electric floor kill counts.

Along these same lines, adding the ability for house owners to perform a one-time name change on living family members would also add "flavor" without changing any mechanics.   I would have a small concern about family members with offensive names, though, which could "spoil immersion".

I think that a good portion of TCD players would like this feature, though I'd probably stick with the defaults as a self-protection mechanism for the ol' psyche.  I don't even mouse over to see family names until my house has made it through that first night unattended.

I think naming house fixtures would increase the emotional attachment to a house and family, which I think is desirable, but I think we're already pretty attached to our houses smile  I still think this would be a fun upgrade to add without breaking the current game balance (which seems pretty great to me right now).

#45 Re: Main Forum » Complete silence to my own traps. 50k house lots » 2014-03-02 05:40:24

Yep, I've definitely died in there before!

I don't understand the purpose of the "steel kennel" in the lower right hand area.  I guess it's a red-herring vault location where robbers go, thinking they'll find the vault, but get trapped instead?   If so, I might add more entrances, or move the entrance to make it more accessible.  (maybe it's something else that I don't understand).

With more money I would next "build back" the family area so that they hang out in the lower right corner instead of the lower left, and add some extra obstacles before they're reached, in order to make the most of those tiles and basically increase the cost of reaching the family.

I would also sprinkle some dogs around the wiring area, and thicken it with cheap wood walls so there's less room to move around.

How did most robbers die in your house?
Did you have a lot of people sawing or tunneling through the walls?
Any successes or near successes to speak of?

Congrats on your successful run, sorry you died, and thanks for sharing your house map - very educational. smile

A great addition to any system, no matter how early or late in your house's life cycle. I couldn't tell you how many times I've used this at the end of a long series of traps, and seen someone navigate them all perfectly... only to fall at the final hurdle. It's a pretty good feeling, and it'll rack up those bounties in no time. Definitely recommended.
If you're up against this one...

  • Your instinct when you see this is to hold right and run into the electric panel. Don't. Move up or down, then move right, then move down or up again, depending on which way you moved first.

  • If the player has disabled vertical movement via a wall-based system, you have a few options. You can try to cut through the wall using a saw/explosives etc, or you can bring some water along to short out the panel.

  • The light and wispy appearance of spiderwebs belie their horrible taste. Do NOT eat them.

The Meat Cleaver

Simple. Cheap. Devilishly effective. I haven't built a single house without using this trap, and it works 90-95% of the time. Perversely, this is one of the few traps that works better on seasoned players as it relies upon subverting learned expectations, so you might want to combine it with a few dogs for the newbies.
If you're up against this one...

  • Every human instinct telling you to follow the direction that arrow is pointing? Think again, my friend; if you look closer, you'll see a pit there.

  • While glass is easily breakable with bricks, there might be a wall behind the glass. Luckily, windows are see-through.

  • Death in the castle doctrine loses you your house and all your money. Not recommended.

This is an ADVANCED TECHNIQUE ONLY, because unless you're a veteran of the game, there's a fair chance you'll die on this one during testing. If you do decide to go for this one, you might want to put it past a one-way path trap - either a door that closes behind you or an electric panel that activates - because if you've been playing for any amount of time, you're going to want to get the hell out of there as soon as you see this.
If you're up against this one...

  • I can't give you any help on this one. You're going to have to muddle through, bring plenty of tools, and hope for the best. Good luck.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Pardon me, but doesn't the whole 'No sales, ever' thing... » 2014-02-28 12:07:26

Shinnbob, my experience is that sales certainly bring in new players.  Some will be "impulse buyers" that don't really give it a shot, but I'm sure there would be others who would find this game very appealing, but didn't hear it was released and need a "reminder", as well as a little financial nudge.

The underlying reason Jason decided not to have sales on TCD, as explained in his blog post, strikes me as extremely noble and well-intentioned .  However, I think Ngu's reasoning is also sound, because I can't see when the next injection of "new blood" will ever arrive.

When I die in TCD, it's very upsetting and I give myself some time off.  I think this is a common reaction, and if it is, that's another bad sign for the long term health of the playerbase.  Losing everything and taking a break is the perfect opportunity to try a different game.

This is an extremely high quality game and it deserves to be successful.  If there was a sale, I wouldn't feel cheated, because I was brought up in a culture of sales. I would be delighted to have some new dimwits to to darken my door.

I have to respect Jason's willingness to experiment and try stuff, especially when he's willing to put his own income on the line.  I guess we'll see what happens.

You sent such powerful vibes at Mr. Holmes that he decided to scout my rickety wooden house.  I was honored to receive him.

I visited his house a few times and it was awesome; it had been up a long time.  Instead of being happy about the money, and despite how dirty his hands were, I'm sorry he died and wish I could buy him a drink.
