perhaps a compromise.. some tools get broken when the successful robber gets super excited at reaching the vault, and just throws their backpack at the ground in triumph!
the throw to the ground completely squashes the bottom half of the backpack, rendering 50% of all tools dropped useless.
example: reach vault with 10 saws and 4 water. vault receives 5 saws and 2 water
it wont stop tool transfer, but it will make it very expensive!
i feel like it was a plot in diagnosis murder. a vietnam veteran and policeman with ptsd bricked his wife and child up in his house because he thought it would keep them safe...
must've been quite amusing to find someone in the wall in this game anyway!
the bounty system needs some fixing indeed. i was just going to rack up a good $100,000 bounty and tell jason to have a look, because that is a lot worse than robbing 2k every 5 minutes
and yes, i also said 'maybe i should go back on my promise' because one turtle house ruling the roost and smashing people below isn't fun for everyone else
you have been the only target of this attack though. might've ran into a few other houses and tried to solve them with starter cash while waiting for the 5 minutes to go grab another $3k bounty, but certainly didn't bombard anyone else.
quick and simple solution i can see: add chills tied to accounts you have committed murder in. - only side effect i can think of quickly is new names popping up on the list that you have chills on... perhaps these chills can take the form of the house simply not showing for an hour?
perhaps another consideration, new houses do not appear on the neighbourhood list for 20~40 minutes, or some other random window? would make it REALLY not worth it to sit and wait a specific time (5 minutes is too easy when you have nothing to do but read the news and wait in all morning for a delivery). right now the neighbour seems slow enough that it wont notice, and if we get an influx of new players.. well it shouldn't really notice then, either.
OH, for the record, i would be happy to forfeit my extra account thingy codes~ if jason prefers a single account only neighbourhood, either now or when he goes steaming! i meant to say that the other night
oh no, runaway family again! wife has fluffed off with the investigating officer!
So I literally spent 5 hours building my base, after i was lucky enough to get a big bounty from my starter home. Dont know why, but I felt like trying to scout out some homes. Ive been avoiding dejesus's house all day, because he has 2 pitbulls right at the front door. against better judgement, I took one step in a died instantly. This has to be a glitch, how can he get into his own safe if one step in kills you?
they can't. when you find a house where one move instantly kills you, it means that house has been successfully robbed since the owner last checked it.
they can't spend their money or leave their house until they perform another self-test successfully, but the house will remain on the list in its broken state until the funds reach $0. likely someone got to the vault and dropped a tool or two, keeping it on the list, but rendering it possibly impossible to solve.
majority of steam buyers will probably not even be aware of the ability to purchase the game from its own website, i doubt many steamies will even think about having more than one account.
i purchased a second account a long time ago because i found watching people try and solve my dances and button pushing thingies way too interesting. i didn't want to die foolishly and miss out on all the potential tapes!
it became a tool of revenge after 'the great laddering' when one user went through every house that featured 100000000000000000 trapdoors (pretty much every house at the time) and laddered them up.
it then became a means of further exploration as some very intriguing houses popped up that i just had to get in and see how they worked.
as of late it has mostly been just to poke around and carelessly rob attempt a robbery on every house in the neighbourhood.
byron died off due to forgetting that power supplies are flat which lead to an unfortunate incident with a cat sleeping on top of one at a very inopportune moment, so there is no impenetrable temple right now. although a house has popped up on the list that looks very much like it. that old 'gotta see how it works' bug is crawling around my ankles looking for a place to bite..
aaaaaaaanyway, i brought up the dual account question a while ago and jason didn't think it was an issue at the time. i can potentially see it changing, it all depends what our new steam friends get up to!
hehehehe, when was the last time you logged in? i haven't seen a page two in many moons
there is one house right now that looks like it is a dog dance and a combo lock at the same time.
the cost of tools make it so even a wooden fortress is pretty much impenetrable. combo locks can be brute forced, but you're going to need like $300,000 worth of tools to make sure you don't end up one crowbar short of victory, or whatever.
cost of building is pretty good right now, feels pretty balanced. cost of robbing is.. well.
i could always go back on my promise and lay waste to these impenetrable houses
i must apologise but i am going to bump this, must've missed it in july!
i like the idea of a chalk outline, personally
ooh dogs wont jump on them to eat you. i was wondering how you were editing without moving that dog! aha. interesting stuff.
i have given my house a renovation!
can we get a countdown to steam release so i can fill every tile of my house with concrete?
some other problems this house is showcasing and possible solutions..
can't disable indicator lights ~ water/club/crowbar to break those suckers! (i've discovered i'm not a fan of tiles that can't be broken )
dogge can't pass panic button, but will jump on it to eat you. ~ unsure if this is a huge problem, replaces the old dead cat in a pit kind of thing, i guess. hmm. button dog button dog button dog button dog.. bit boring family defence
shouldn't be hard to fix, just need the door state to be open and it should look okay!
i haven't poked around too much, got eaten by the dog and it piqued my curiosity so i shot it and had a look to see if it was the ultimate doggy defence!
oh no, don't get me wrong. money is slow and hard and tools are.. almost not worth the spend if you don't know what is behind that door that costs $2400 to crack open. could be another power door.
in the last incarnation of the game, with the player and wife earning 'hourly' money, there was still no/very little money going around. because the people who had a 'secure' house could safely count their coins, and the moment any home of a poorer person started to look a bit too rich, the rich person would come along and completely obliterate it - without thinking about the cost, because money didn't matter.
it was like this
TOP HOUSE > crushes any house below it at all costs, spending to $0 if necessary, because their wages will just roll in safely.
OTHER HOUSE > starting cash is too wank to even think about cracking the top house, starting cash was too wank to build a house that could survive the wrath of the top house.
as jason said, the wages just lead to mass turtling, and once a king turtle or two are established, it is almost impossible for anyone else to get near them. however this is also possibly just a problem with low player numbers as well..
the low population is definitely making the game hard. hard to play without getting frustrated/bored at the lack of content/cash, hard to develop/design as.. well, it is hard to tell what would happen if there were, as you say, even 50 fairly active players would be shockingly different, i think.
i am sure it is by no fault of their own, but this player's house has a dog 'hidden' on a door that will eat you the moment you walk in, if you aren't squinting carefully.
perhaps when a dog starts on a door, the door should be open?
including my house i count eight houses right now. that is the most houses i've seen in the neighbourhood for a very long time
what looks like a safe move might be instakill.
it is slightly more devious than a cat pushing a button a few turns later, and i kind of like how delicious that is. but it is certainly a little unfair to have no warning at all
The last one in particular is interesting. This could mean that with certain designs if the family members are killed, the vault is rendered inaccessible without using copious amounts of tools.
this excites me a lot and made me download the game.
let the family buttons that must be pushed in order puzzle game commence!
The thought of robbing your own house in the pitch black, only having your hand-scrawled guide to refer to is hilarious.
my memory is bloody awful, i was always robbing my own house in the dark! https://i.imgur.com/ACHsbdl.png https://i.imgur.com/fV1Mdb3.png
good thing i left a phone number in one of these. hmm
i missed a few changes, but i do like doing these house evolution things.
eeh, ignore that super-old house at the end
tis a bit stale.
..i think ukuko was talking about setting up a blueprint server. idk!
i purchased more than one account because the 'risk vs reward' for venturing into a house just didn't thrill me at all. and at the same time i didn't want to have to sit doing nothing or not have a house and just try to rob people.
and that hasn't changed.. in fact i think it has gotten worse. it is so easy to get trapped in a house now, you're looking at a gun + ladder + brick/water to get back past even one of those dog/grid/pit thingies.
i quite liked the permadeath server, because having more than one account didn't help you at all.. it gave you another life in case you messed up, but that was about it. ..is the permadeath server still around?
there were quite a few top-dog houses and i am pretty sure i didn't break all of them. i definitely broke another one that had come in and robbed me.
haha, my comment before was back when you could make $100,000 out of nowhere in about ten minutes with very little risk. i definitely think tools not going in the vault after you run out of a house would have prevented me from acquiring such a huge mess of tools..
i mean, i live in a neighbourhood in the suburbs of london that is relatively calm, the shootings and stabbings and car fires are all a few minutes walk away. we had a gnome in our garden. one day it wasn't there any more.
we put out a hallow e'en pumpkin one year. one night the pumpkin was no longer there. and the table it had been sitting on. but apparently my parent put the table out hoping it wouldn't be there any more. so basically people will steal anything, even if it is a good 12ft inside your property boundary.
now running out of the house, dropping your tools as you flee? in THIS neighbourhood?! those tools are not going to be there when you get home. - maybe you have convinced your partner to scan the garden every 30 minutes to check for free tools.. but some people's partners have been horribly murdered in a club related accident.
so, what are the current rules for robber tools going to the vault?
death within the house - this makes sense, pile of tools on a corpse just laying there. or hanging. or in a pit. or melted onto a metal grid :s
reaching the vault - this makes sense too, dumping your bag of its tools to refill it with dollars and paintings and.. uh, some tools in the vault that must be worth more than your cheap-ass tools you brought.
running out of the door screaming like a baby and dropping your bag in the doorway in what is possibly the worst neighbourhood in the world - i think maybe if your partner is alive, a 50% chance they get them before someone else does. but if they are dead, i'd say a 100% chance of someone else coming along and taking them to the pawn shop.
i'll promise to stop abusing the current tool-drop system for now and stick to robbing with just the starter cash and whatever i can build up through subsequent robberies. i'll also go see if the permadeath server is alive and has any residents!
after piecing together a map after many, many, many visits (i can post it here if you like), i decided guessing which way a cat is going to walk was almost as boring as a combo lock!
my plan was.. rob a few small houses for $4000 or so using alternative account, buy tools and then dump those tools into my safe house. use my safe houses earnings (which are kind of ridiculous) to buy a bunch more tools, consult my map of your house and go investigate! i believe a lot of destruction was paid for with the takings from your vault and partner (around $22,000?)
i have been peeking and poking around your house for a very long time! i like how many times you changed just a few wires to change up the safe route. and i appreciate you not brutally murdering my family all the times you walked right through them.. but you hurt so many of my dogs!
i am le mole
a little newspaper obituary clipping might be fun
once again, i'm no art person.. http://i.imgur.com/txGrh2C.png
