WTH?

Okay, so kinda new to the game, and had the following happen: some guy cased my house once without tools. Then came back with tools, shorted out some electric flooring to get out, then came back again with more water and got through to the vault. I thought you could not re-enter a house you'd used tools in?

Re: WTH?

You only get chills trough deaths, if he survived your house, he can come back again and again. If he die after he was in your house with tools, he will get chills to your house.

Re: WTH?

Ahhh. So, chills only hit applicable houses once you die. Good to know for future robbing attempts. In the meantime... vault v2 is in place this life. First guy into my current house clubbed the entire family. Kind of a waste for whatever split of $10 the wife had. A few robbers later, someone guessed the combo, but wound up dead anyway since the panic button had been on from the earlier invasion, perma-locking vault's inner hall. Love those commit gates...

Re: WTH?

Welcome to the forum all you cool new people!

Chills are a little confusing and I can't find information on the wiki, but  I know through experience that Kimenzar and mala are both correct.

Chills exist for balance reasons, to prevent the same player from endlessly attacking the same house after dying there (and other various money transfer exploits).

You get a "chills" in house X if you die there OR carry tools in there and die elsewhere. They last 24 hours.

I do not know the exact moment the "chills clock" starts, but my guess is that it's the moment of death.

It's the moment you enter/exit the house (can't remember which, but shouldn't be too different).  Here's an example:

Hours - Action

00 - Player visits House A, carries tools
01 - Player visits House B, doesn't have any tools
04 - Player visits House C, dies

At this point, house A would have 20 hours of chills, House B has no chills (since he took no tools in), House C has 24 hours of chills.

And remember that time is only taken off of chills when the house is on the list, so if the owner is editing their house a lot (or it's being robbed a lot), chills could be longer than 24 hours in real time.

Fortress Theory Mod - New objects, tools, and paintings!

I keep dying of a natural cause - Stupidity
The biggest thing that Castle Doctrine has taught me is that the price of your house is proportional to the stupidity of the mistake that kills you.

The clock wouldn't be going down when you're inside the house anyway, since it's off the list, so I think it would be the moment that you leave the house either way.

Re: WTH?

Afaik the houses you robbed before dying get the chills too. Even if you didn't bring tools.

Re: WTH?

Yep, I believe House B would also have the Chills.

Re: WTH?

No just entering doesn't cause chills. What I meant was a successful robbery.

Re: WTH?

Well for the most part I've given up the robbing game. At least for now. House is currently sitting at $57. But it's been a slow start this life. I'm hoping more people get ballsy enough to brave more than a few steps...

edit: no sooner than I post this, do I wind up taking one step too many in someone else's house... doh.

Re: WTH?

I don't think it is worth it to start a game with the 2k. If you know all the tricks for robbery then you can usually crack one of the 4-8k houses pretty easily (and with a bit of luck). And if you fail, so what? You can always start with 2k later anyway.

Re: WTH?

I find that I'm a bit too move-twitchy most of the time, and safe-move annoys me too much most of the time... so I'll overshoot a door or the way out. Some guy who I robbed earlier (I forget the name) got to watch me run in circles 3 or 4 times being chased by a pitbull, before finally making the correct turn to gtfo. However, I then came back and made it through to his vault. I mainly try to stick to bait-robbing though. Guy's wife was still around when I went through. Once I get enough, eventually I'll build up some sort of huge bit-lock... behind a seemingly simple/easy to crack facade... *evil cackle*

Re: WTH?

Don't get me wrong, combination locks are an effective part of the game and I have been known to use them, but they are a very weak form of defense against determined robbers. If it is your last line of defense then I wouldn't want to carry more than about 10k at any given time.

Re: WTH?

Well, as I keep refining/rebuilding various designs I've come up with, I'm starting to learn how to plan ahead better, so I can build up the defense layers around the combination/access route to become cost-prohibitive. And while I'm not 100% sure yet (there's always that one thing that doesn't get thought of until you see it happen to you...) that my 2k starting designs are impenetrable by any possible 2k tool loadout. Does kind of skimp on the wife though. But since so many people seem to get off on wife-killing (I've been scouted then wife-killed for less than a club's resale value), I figure why waste the cash on building up family defenses. If they survive, well, there's always the bait traps along their path... Or at the very least guaranteed death if they manage to get close enough to kill the wife/kids unless they want to blow 12+k... But I doubt I'll be seeing my house get that advanced for some time yet... damn stupid deaths.

Re: WTH?

Cat/dog/pit paths are effective and relatively cheap forms of family protection. Especially when surrounded in concrete. Just add another layer of C/D/P per $1200 the wife will be holding and it is a cost effective defense.

Re: WTH?

Thanks for the tip. I'm still figuring out all the various pet interaction nuances. Though I did come up with a particularly nasty dog-lock-the-vault-commit-gate a few houses back, killed quite a few people with that one. Then I borked a self-test and was forced to waste money re-buying defense items after having put the house on safety... then died to other stupidity/not paying attention moments.
