Americans17, that's what happens when a robber gets disconnected from the server.
I've never been paid for playing a video game before. Awesome!
Thanks, Jason, for a great game and a fun contest!
It's way more fun to use a toggle switch instead of a sticky switch in that situation. Makes the electric floor look safe, because "hey, I can just toggle the switch back off!" Except, no, you can't! I've racked up so many kills from that simple trick.
Jason explains some of his reasons for why you can die while self-testing here:

Basically, house security is dangerous, and if it can kill robbers it should be able to kill you too! As for "the minor little one or two changes when you put everything back to normal," I would recommend rerunning your safe-indicator-light test even after those minor changes.
EDIT: Ninja-ed by Jason himself! There you have it.
This is actually a feature that is already implemented! You can test your house 100% safely by replacing electric floors with Conducting Indicator Lights, trapdoors and powered doors with Non-Conducting Indicator lights, and pitbulls with chihuahuas.
Then, once you safely reach your safe, backtrack to the exit (don't actually touch your safe) so that you don't get charged for the lights, and replace them with the deadly traps. But that way you won't die because you messed up wiring somewhere.
Yeah, it wasn't a broken house or dead bodies or anything. The kid was simply blocking the wife's path, and since the KID hadn't seen you yet he wouldn't move. Very clever design! I also thought it was a nice touch to hide the shotgun, so it is even more of a surprise when you open the door.
Instead of creating a new thread for each new idea, it would be better to post them in the Suggestions Thread:

Keeps the forum cleaner and easier to read.
I can confirm this. Found him on the list and saw all the family. Weird. Has got to be hacking somehow.
I returned with a bunch of clubs, though, to punish him....
I wonder how many total steps were taken? Average steps per robbery would be an interesting statistic!
I don't get that. The poor are already using a small number of tools, right? They aren't going in with 10+ of a single tool. The change to their prices would be negligible.
Yes, this. It can't possibly hurt the poor more than the rich, because the cost increases non-linearly the more you spend.
Maybe there could be some sort of pay-to-know sort of thing. As far as lore goes, it could be explained as paying a fence or someone else in the know for information. Maybe it is $10k to get a list of all houses in the neighborhood that have a painting inside. Or you could pay $25k to know exactly who has a particular painting you are after.
Whatever the actual cost is tuned to be, this way you preserve the feelings of surprise when you stumble across something in the wild, but at the same time, as the player-base grows and grows and grows and it becomes almost impossible to check every house, richer robbers who are after a particular painting have a way to find it.
I do wonder, though... this makes the rich even more invulnerable! Both to each other, and to lower players.
I mean, for a certain house design, brute forcing is the ONLY option---for houses that would take an exponential number of guesses to pass without tools.
True, but right now a rich Robber is already essentially invulnerable, and rich House-owners (and low to mid level owners) are essentially at the mercy of the uber-rich Robbers. This tweak would nerf uber-rich Robbers' ability to brute force entire houses. They can still easily carry enough tools to brute force a combo lock at the back of the house, they would just have to be strategic in where they brute force and where they avoid traps the sneaky way.
P.S. I just got the game during the contest (Iceman was raving about how awesome the game was on the SpyParty forums, so I thought I would check it out) and I think it is awesome. There is way more depth of strategy and even meta-gaming than I thought there would be. Fantastic game!
That's brilliant! I've been thinking that there should be some sort of upper limit on the number of tools you can carry, but I know Jason has said he doesn't want to do that.
This, however, still allows unlimited tools but makes it cost prohibitive. A very elegant solution.
Well, the latest edit of my house killed 69 robbers before succumbing to John James Eastwood's brute force attack with over $27k in tools. I'm more upset that I lost my Sky painting, though! At least it appears Eastwood is no more, since I can't find his house and the painting is back up for auction. Serves him right.
I'm curious what happened to the million dollar house that was up there most of today! That was nuts. Did the owner die, or is he just editing? EDIT: He's back with $1.2 million. Earl Arthur Willson. Impressive!
Also, I just broke $50k and made it to the top page for the first time! woohoo!
...and uh-oh! *runs off to strengthen defenses*
P.S. Mine is the one with the lighted arrow pointing the way!
Best trap ever. I can't stop laughing!
The game opens in Steam, so files should be fine. It's just that it won't log you in to the server without updating.
Edit: Just tried Steam again, and it is working. Not sure if that is (or even could be) related to the fact that I downloaded the newest non-Steam version.
Yeah, I cant get in through Steam either, it says I need to download the update but there is no option in Steam to do so.
I was able to download the new non-Steam version, though, and that works fine, so it's not a server issue.
