I'd recommend just robbing to get more than the initial $2k to start building. If you do want to build a house with the initial $2k, try setting up a wife trap. You'll have to watch it closely though since it's easy to break once people have seen it.

I think your name was Nicolas Mark Sherry. If so, your bounty was $21,900. I apologize for my wife, she's a b*tch.

I just recently got back into thinking about house designs for this game. I wanted to play around a bit with the good old wife trap. Didn't think it would kill this fast especially in this small neighborhood. I guess I still got it smile.

I built the house on the initial $2k and then burned the money on some more dogs and pointless windows, walls, and a cat to get my value down to $100 exactly.

I'm just running around in self test, playing with some designs (mostly safe). I'll let you steal your bounty back if you message me while i'm still on. Or it'll prolly be returned to the State with a suicide, or dumped into a bunch of putbulls.

Huh! That clean slate is a really interesting (and extremely careful) way to draft. I never would've thought of that!

Early in my theft career, I noticed i kept wondering if i saw an open space or just didn't note what it was. Ever since then I wanted the draft to be clear.

FreeLove wrote:

Your notes make it really easy to track the robbing process, and I was interested to see we practically took the exact same steps on the Longoria house! And I was really impressed how far you managed on the Pinon house with just a ladder, and by only deducing the dances.

Yeah, I stopped playing before I finished off the houses listed. I felt pretty close to some of them. I ended up killing Prendergast's wife then giving the money away. Pinon's place allows a lot of free reign and experimenting for cheap. I think I made like ten trips on that first visit (one life). The movement was easy to figure out by what was given except for the southern dog dance (it would take a lot lives) that controlled the trapdoor east. A ladder was better than wasting lives figuring it out.

FreeLove wrote:

In fact, I think you were much more adept than I am at using a single ladder for a 2K robbery. I think I often neglect to consider that possibility when it can really help scout forward a considerable amount.

I just bring what I need after scouting. All the big houses have trapdoors, so a ladder is mandatory, but I don't bring it in blind. I think you were a more successful robber than I was. I only looked for seed money for a house, and didn't do anything risky when I had a house (just picked at low hanging fruit from time to time).

Also, did you ever visit the Jensen House?

#4 Re: Main Forum » A Robber's Diary: Some Maps, Some Thoughts, and A Few Good Scores » 2014-07-22 17:33:43

Freelove,

I occasionally lurk by the forum and had to log in and thank you for such an awesome read. It makes me wish I spent more time doing a journal instead of just recording robbery notes.

I checked back through my old files to see if I still had something and found the last robbing phase. I wanted to contribute something to your post as you contributed a great portion to the robbing guide I wrote up smile

The structure of notes has the houses separated by name with top targets at the start and broken/disappeared/combo lock houses moved to the bottom. Combo lock houses I would revisit if I decided to chain. The map consists of what I explored that run. The notes are what I jotted down. And the plan is what I referred to right before the next visit. If you check out the dates, this file only had 2 robbery spans (beginning May 20 and again on June 2nd). There will be some mistakes in date and money because I copy and pasted and sometimes forgot to change it for the next visit. Anyway,

Hopefully you can enjoy my 2k robbing notes as much as I enjoyed your diary.

p.s. I didn't check if any of these were still up so I apologize if I reveal anything still active.

This game is awesome. It's been fun robbing and I was going to start building out the new design that was waiting. However, I know I'm spending way too much time here, and maintaining the new house would take even more. And so, I must break off to focus on other endeavors.

I leave a small puzzle with a huge reward, I hope you solve it tool-less.
Take care.

I started contemplating it when Blip popped back up since he knew the last location. I'd remodel the place before he was gonna be active. Was planning to run the change this weekend if no one broke it.

If someone did, I was gonna use the wifey money to remodel.

Would also like to know and hear about the house. Was just starting to scout the place and figured out the dog start, however I couldn't get past the northern powered door behind the dog. I think the southern cat had to do something with it. Cutting into the combo lock only showed it just turned power on and off.

Yeah, next time leave the family alone. I usually make it really expensive to kill them. $45k should have been enough. I was gonna use the money to completely change the house, but I'll have to get it the old fashioned way now. Not sure how I'm gonna do that since I already have one account robbing. It's hard to forget what I already know, and I'm planning on leading the single account life for now. I probably wont be using him to rob until I get a house set up for my original account.

Btw the cat that controls the grid i thought would be way more elaborate. defiantly one of the most well designed houses i have ever seen.

Yeah, two buttons is pretty simple. I do like certain things from this design, however, I feel like the Jensen house was leagues above this one. Please check that out and let me know what you think over on that thread. The bottom left location was added after I already implemented hidden dances in the Jensen/Ponder house.

iceman wrote:

I absolutely LOVED this house because of one little area- the exit after scaring the cat across the center pits.  I knew you had to get up there and scare the cat down, but I couldn't figure out how it was possible to get back down there after that.  Then, suddenly, I realized- one of the powered doors to the left didn't recieve power from below.  Your house uses powered doors as walls so much that you were actually able to make a fake wall!  When I did go through that area, it felt like I was crawling through this cramped, secret tunnel that shouldn't have existed.  Pretty much the exact same feelings as going through the non-test chamber areas in Portal, actually!

The cat pit lock was an older idea that I liked but had in houses I kept self test dying in because I setup too many dogs to kill. I also disguised it so well that no one would question that it was only family defense. When I designed this one, I wanted to hint that it was possible to go through and was the gate to the centerpiece 7 way cat path. That centerpiece was way too huge and not really efficient. I've improved since then and sized down my traps.

That powered door can actually be locked. There's a way to cross the entrance without timing the trapdoor on with the cat. It involves sending the cat over then dancing just south to get the cat to power the trapdoor. This allows you to cross and go north (using the untouched dog). However since the power is set on by the cat, this would lock that door when trying to return south. My friend loved the fact that the center powered doors makes a nice "S" shape (and his char's name started with an S). I'm glad you found that tunnel so interesting. And yes, it was purposely hidden within the rest of the powered door wall smile.

p.s. If you want the map to put this up on fortress theory and play with it, I can send you the code again.

iceman wrote:

Yeah, I'd like to know how to get to the bottom left vault as well.

The cat in the corner is only for brute force defense and has nothing to do with the solution. The cat locks the door when people shoot through the dogs. This causes gun toting family hunters to revisit and bring crowbars if they want to explore that area (not to mention rebuy the guns to get down there).

My hint of visiting the dogs alluded to the solution.
The key to getting to that vault location is spotting the dog that will open the door for you. When you first enter the house, you have to head south to make sure the last dog in the second column sees you. After that, you proceed past the entrance and south (you have to watch out for the first electric grid pulse).

Once you are on the grid, you wanna spot the dog in the west behind the wooden door then head for the trapdoor where the grid will pulse and kill him (clearing him now will help you later). Then after you cross the trapdoor you'll spot the dog in front of the western powered door. I usually walk 1 space towards him to get him properly spaced, then you walk east and north to the northeastern trap door and get the grid to pulse and kill that dog.

Now you have to go back northwest and circle around to the southwest trapdoor, because if you go immediately south the grid pulse will kill you. It's time to kill the third dog. Open the powered door with the light in front of it to release him. Then head up to the northeast trapdoor and then circle around again to the southwest. The dog will die on the second pulse.

Now with the dog out of the way, you want to head over to the hallway he was in, and step towards the wall 3 times. This will give the dog that you spotted at the beginning a chance to run towards you (around the wall and the vault) and unlock two powered doors. Exit the hallway and unlock the western most powered door to reveal the dog. I usually kill him off with a grid pulse, but you could also just loop around wooden pillar and head for the vault.

I was here a couple times, trying to figure out the cat timing. Usually came with a ladder to test out when things would turn on. Was about to give it a go on step 8, it worked on 8 and 10, died on 6, so I figure the proper time to cross was step 8, and then on step 16 there would probably be another trapdoor to cross. I'm only scouting on one account, but that's what I found out after 2 days.

This was probably me. I tend to visit multiple times if allowed. I think I accidentally ran into a dog at the end though. big_smile

Here's the full map. Vault locations in yellow.

This is a much older design than Jensen's and I feel there's plenty of weaknesses. It's basically divided into 3 large sections. The last part was the centerpiece: a multiple choice cat fest with really only 2 places that you can actually reach. The lower left vault location was added much later to make it easier to self test (friend's request), and is a very elusive and non obvious location.

Yeah you were the one who panic ran to the south location. I remember. big_smile

Anyway, seems like Puma after weeks of using an alt scout, decided to come in with his main with a brute force kit. I was hopin he'd be able to get to it without tools (or at least a 2k set). He did have about 95% of the map, and I'm pretty sure he's spent over $100k over the lifetime of scouting. In the last week, he brought crowbars almost everyday.

Unfortunately he also decided to take out Geyer's wife. He probably should have left her alone since, it wasn't for profit, and the karma may have hit him during a self test (I don't see Harmon around).

When you say "experiment," I'm wondering what it is you are testing and why is it interesting that a low percentage was able to solve it? Isn't that the case with all the houses you've made?

Within the past few days, I've seen two people with $200 bounties.

There must be some old players coming back with really old chars to die at my place.
John Terrance Marshall $200
Richard Max Kirkpatrick $200
Any of you guys on the forum?

Well Cylance you solved it, and so did one other - thanks for the tape.  For such a simple house it has been a top cash generator cause it seems to work pretty well in a world with this few players.  If you want to come grab the vault, I will post the solution after you do that.

I don't plan on grabbing the vault unless I find some combo lock I'd want to chain rob. This was only my first day of exploring the neighborhood. I'm still enjoying my robbing phase. Go ahead and post the solution if you want to. If your place is still up when I've got a reason to have an extra $3k (assuming your wife is alive), then I'll stop by then.

$6125

Tigerbalm let me know your name, so I was able to visit. During my one life, I stopped by multiple times, first with a couple doorstops and meat to check out the path to the door.

Then I came back with some bricks and clubs to venture south to see if there was a path to family down there.

Then after I solved it, I just committed suicide right before the vault.

Enjoy the tapes big_smile

If I get my value over 4k (2.7 right now but with a bunch of paintings) will you come visit me too? I long for intelligent robbers! I am Mr Pleasant.

Couldn't stop by because I couldn't find your house.

Tiger, thanks for the name drop.

I just visited cullman's Turner. Solved it in one life (multiple visits). Didn't grab the vault though. Just committed suicide one step in front. No need for the $3k or $6k. I'm enjoying my robbing life for now. Maybe I'll come back if I need the money for a deeper scout somewhere big_smile.

I think you pretty much have like 90% of the place mapped by now, right?

I stopped by just now on one life. Didn't map anything. You are around 6k, so I might start. Just wanted to check out the place. Awesome post by the way, I like the intro, font and all the graphics smile.

Used a ladder to check right and take a look at the chihuahuas. Then went north to say hello to the dogs who close doors. big_smile

oh i see, i apologize for the mix up and/or sounding presumptuous. spooky entrance.  i'll have to take your word wrt the rest of it.  no scouts to send diving hmm

Tiger, nope, I'm only watching Geyer's house. And Jensen hung himself at home since his wife is dead. I scouted the first page (minus Geyer) with my fresh start.

Puma, I stopped by Hamon's on one life. Your value is too low for me to put more time into mapping out your place. I kinda of just wanted to see what you did with the entrance. I ended up exploring a lot of your place on 1 life with multiple visits.

TheRealCheese and cullman, I tried stopping by your houses, but I don't think they are up anymore sad
