i was pondering how game changing it might be to have pets that don't fling themselves to broken limbs. . . . .

however, at the same time in real life i have seen many animals misjudge a jump and fall down. maybe dogs that fall in pits can climb out and limp along after a few turns? tongue

#327 Re: Main Forum » the neighbourhood is so empty » 2013-06-23 17:58:47

it sort of fills up and then empties when the poorer folks log out. and get robbed blind.

however! it was nice to see a bunch of new names pop up today with new houses smile

what if i work at the tool shop? they seem to be doing enough business to pay $70 an hour, too.

i've definitely noticed that if you have two accounts, rob your own house with one and just close the client, you will not be able to return to that house until that old robbery has timed out, or you log back in your other account to start fresh.

*scorch marks cover the hall, you can see all the way to the dining room. your loyal dog, rover, lies on the floor with a caved in skull and traces of raw meat stuck in his teeth. your sons lifeless body lies like a rag doll thrown across the room by a toddler. your toddler is unrecognisable, the imprint of a crowbar distorts her face. you find your cat underneath a brick.*

i'll go completely off-topic because i don't want to make another thread..

what resolution are people playing at? i am fashioning some hotkey ability with autoit, but suddenly realised people probably use a different resolution to me *shrug* easy enough to change the pixels. i'll go finish~

How about making it that a sleeping dog wakes up if the robber walks next to

Hum, considering that I have a fully repaired house, I might just kill those spouses so nobody can afford 26(!!!!!) ladders to reach my 7000$ (!!!!!!!!!) safe as has happened before, curiously...

i think it comes down to not having much else to do in the game.

and when presented with a house which is 'do a magic dance or push these buttons in the right order a certain number of times,' the lack of blueprints and the curiosity to see what lies beyond those trapdoors/grids/powered doors/layers of concrete, wood, steel and pits is a very compelling force. the sense of achievement* is worth more than the game dollars.

*achievement in the castle doctrine appears to be a mix of joy of accomplishment and delight in violating someone's hard work.

so i am ronald john miller, and while i did indeed welcome complete and total destruction.. it didn't quite come as i'd expected.

so someone paid me a visit with $45,000 worth of tools, or some such. they died. and then jeremy joseph higgins came in, with the same tools and proceeded to tunnel to my vault.

my question is, how long did it take you to get the $100,000 (or whatever it was) required to purchase that many tools?

my house was a bit of an experiment. how much can people hate my 'impossible' house? enough to spend $100,000 of tools to get my obama painting, it seems!
but the lack of vandalism is interesting..  i even left my house exposed overnight to see if it would be razed to the ground in a ritualistic fashion.. the lack of savagery was a surprise!

it seems like the house joseph has built with their remaining money is the same kind of 'impossible' that ronald's was, so this was obviously not a protest to my house being 'game ruining.' i do look forward to adventuring inside and seeing how many layers of concrete they have erected smile

#345 Re: Main Forum » Encouraging desirable player behaviour » 2013-06-17 14:46:29

certainly not cost-effective, certainly takes up a lot more space and certainly hopes that a player will make a mistake estimating where a dog is going to step next!

caltrops sound interesting smile

#346 Re: Main Forum » Balancing tool cost » 2013-06-17 14:15:41

i've been pondering windows or a single 'escape hatch' that everyone gets to place that your family (and the robber) can use to make a quick exit..

but how to prevent people just putting that escape hatch/window right next to the family, or indeed walling it off to keep the robber in..

ooooh it's tricky! the castle doctrine v10, let sleeping dogs lie. scary tunnels!

#347 Re: Main Forum » Encouraging desirable player behaviour » 2013-06-17 14:08:31

i think tunnel 'o dogs that can just be mowed down is a flaw of the home designer, not the game engine. you can take up a bit more space and make dogs that are a bit harder to wrangle.. i've seen a few hard to wrangle dog herds in the past!

What about this crowbar-proof family dog? ...

i have been sleeping dogs and waking them up after i've walked past them as a quite effective way of pushing some tricky buttons when i didn't have a brick. it definitely makes sense that clubbing a sleeping dog is too easy, but being unable to wake them up would feel like a shame. hmm

i never thought of it like that. this makes a lot of sense and i graciously withdraw from the 'my family are such a bunch of prissy whiners, can't even step over a wire' party.

#349 Re: Main Forum » A quick recap, and why v9 is an improvement, but not a perfect fix. » 2013-06-17 12:47:51

my brain farted and i meant to put the chihuahua just below the entrance row! the point of my house was more to display the price-gap between killing a family and raiding a vault, but it also works to display a completely insane house [if you put the family just below the entrance row so that doormat to vault is completely pits, the currently most expensive tile to counter.

v9 is pretty good, i am having fun! it is fun waiting to see who will come in and completely destroy my house. i welcome the inevitable destruction, as frustrating as it is smile

#350 Re: Main Forum » My thoughts on this game (I only started after v9) » 2013-06-17 10:38:15

http://castlefortify.com/c/89ca7c1 ps. pretend saws don't exist and that the switch is not so easy to push.

obviously this is not a real house and you can do much more to defend your family / vault. but in a direct line, tool cost to reach this vault is $16,800. cost to club my partner is $5,802.

of course nothing is perfectly safe any more with the new super backpack, no matter how many dogges/trapdoors you hide behind. but that still seems like a big price-gap for this direct comparison.

edit: alternatively, here is a one-time robbable house. pretend it has just been robbed, but the robber dropped 50 guns in there. the little chihuahua is dead in a pit. http://castlefortify.com/c/4636cc4

alternative ps. i am saving up my pennies and making this, just you wait!
alt pps. maybe that chihuahua will walk on the wife and not the button.. bleh! -1 pitbull for a wall.
