I know that during the contest Chill times were changed. Does anyone know what the official Chill times are back at now that the contest is over? I thought I knew but am kind of confused today. smile

Chill for dying in house?
Chill for entering house with tools but successfully leaving w/o reaching safe?

Curios to know what people take with their starting $2000 when you are planning on a robbing spree to make some $$$?

Just thought I would try and re-post this since a lot of new players are starting CastleDoc and need some tips and such. There are "better" ways people have developed over time to make a house design online but I still prefer the old pen and paper method for creating my traps. For me it works with the 1991 time-frame of the game. smile

YES, and use the indicator lights ALOT to test advanced traps. I have died many times assuming everything will work...

Yes, everyone plays on the same default server. Unless you use the games source code to start your own server which Jason has information about here:

Glad to have you aboard Pirate! The game is fantastic and the community here is a lot of fun and very talkative. smile

Look Someguy I am not trying to be rude to your request. I do understand getting robbed can be frustrating but I can't stress enough what I said about the game always being scary and a gamble. It's a game that can be extremely disheartening but also extremely rewarding. Remember every house can be broken with no tools, so its really important to study traps and learn about them. It takes ALOT of experimenting and I would be a liar if I said I haven't gotten extremely frustrated with the game and stopped playing for a week or two because of not being able to get a good amount of $ to make a decent house. But that thrill of robbing someone for $20,000+ is unrivaled. It takes time and the learning curve for the game is huge. But now that the game has been out for a while in alpha there are alot of good threads on these forums and pages on the wiki explaining alot of the traps that I have spent numerous hours dying on and trying to figure out. This is just my opinion from playing the game for almost a year now and having numerous discussions with lots of people on these forums.

BUT who knows and maybe something like this could happen if it becomes frustrating for a lot of the new players. Alot has changed over the past year and I am not sure if Jason is going to continue to make changes and experiment with multiple releases of the game.  smile

You can already do that if you keep checking your house and editing your design as you get more money. You keep the value low and get no attention from rich players. The problem is I have to sleep and then I accumulate money because my design is half decent until a rich player just decides to rob me.

If you keep editing your house over and over it will keep showing a 0/0 at the main house screen and you would be suprised how fast 0/0 houses get picked upon even if they are under 2000. There used to be a salary function in the game that you would accumulate money over time for doing nothing but that has been removed. The main way to make money is not to luckily have a rich person rob your house, although that can work, you need to actively pursue houses to make money.

I dont really know what to say other than this is kind of the whole basis behind this game and what makes it scary to leave your house alone, its always a gamble. You shouldnt want to leave the game because at any moment someone can rob you.

Here is the official WIKI.

http://thecastledoctrine.gamepedia.com/ … trine_Wiki

But honestly when I started playing this game in Alpha last March a LOT of the fun was trying to figure out what each weapon did, how to make electronics work, WTF a cat did, etc. My buddy and I discussed it every day and immediately told each other once we realized something new like that a Brick could make a pressure plate turn on from a distance or something like that. It was an awesome thing to figure out whilst playing. smile

I understand the frustration of getting to know the game and having all your stuff stolen, but ultimately I think people would end up spamming this feature. They would spend the first day pumping up a house with no threat of being robbed, only to show up the next day with a extremely tough house and that would ultimately not be fair.

One of the best things about this game is honestly how fair it is for everyone across the board. There is no DLC, there is no power-ups, the only way to make a better house is to rob other houses while also building up your own. If people had an option to hide their house for a day it would become TOO powerful (there were similar things like this in the Alpha that gave advantages and were ultimately removed for that reason). You have to play the game with extreme caution ALL THE TIME and that is what I love about the game. YOU ARE NEVER SAFE. The game has an extreme learning curve but at the same time it is extremely rewarding.

#62 Re: Main Forum » Watching live / semi-live feed of burglary? » 2014-01-28 15:37:55

I like this idea as long as there are NO other incentives besides being able to watch the person rob your house. And I think that security cameras do fit in with the overall aesthetic of the game BUT since in real life if you were watching your cameras and saw someone robbing your house you would call the cops and not just watch someone rob you. So I think that for that reason this wont ever come to happen in CastleDoc. This game revolves its mechanics around real life scenarios that Jason has written alot about in the past. I like the idea but think it would take away overall from the aesthetic Jason is going for?

#63 Re: Main Forum » Launch Contest » 2014-01-28 15:33:12

I believe it was a top 8 because that has always been the number of people on each page within the game. I like a top 8, its specific to the game. But I do hope there is a possibility of more contests in the future. This past week was very fun and a great way to send the game into release on Steam.

It would be nice to be able to save your edited state so you could play for half an hour at a time without having to start over.

Even though I have wanted this feature in the past, more often than not, every time I have to rebuild a house I end up learning something new and making a better house. ALSO, the devastation that ensues every time I die in this game is BRUTAL (and AWESOME). I once commented about staring at my screen for 5 minutes after I died testing my own house too quickly and it perfectly sums up my love for this game, as I posted in my original topic above. Having saved states would totally ruin the thrill of trying to rob other people if you know you could easily get your "saved state house" back instantly. Jason has commented many times on this topic too within these forums and explained his reasoning as well.

#65 Re: Main Forum » Real Money Contest / Thanks for a good year » 2014-01-28 12:43:40

One thing I just thought of: it would be kind of neat if there were automated contests that ran weekly and instead of money the top houses won some special item/tile/painting. Maybe you could even lose these items as normal, but they would be completely unique. Something to strive for besides pure money.

^ This would be awesome.

Even though the money was a cool incentive, the real thing I wanted was one of the pieces of art, or the certificate to the gun shop (not that I want a weapon, but as sort of a right of passage for the game's history, as I do live in NM I could go there). But a monthly contest would be awesome, maybe even just for a simple art print or something. This dedicated contest really upped the ante and player involvement in the game. Even getting into a $2000 house was an hard achievement to get over this past weekened! smile I could feel the "others" staring into their computers and just waiting to steal my dough, it was INTENSE!

I just wanted to start a discussion about the Real Money Contest that just wrapped. How did others play during this and/or what was your interest?

I myself have been playing this game since the Spring and gone through phases of involvement with the forums and releases but this contest was a great, great time for me. It was SUPER intense and kind of turned me into a crazed-obsessed Castle Doc player. I basically spent almost every ounce of free time I had checking on my house and trying to stake out others. I think this was a really cool idea by Jason to get people back interested in the game that have been playing it throughout the year as well as to gain interest before release. I also think it was a great way for Jason to give back to the community and create a very original game contest.

I haven't played Castle Doc much in the previous month and a half and weren't totally up to date on all the newest changes and additions to the game but I really feel like this game has reached a really well-rounded state now, right before release. I am going to continue to play the game a couple times a week and check in on my house and try but Castle Doc is kind of all or nothing to me. When I have gotten into this game over the past year, including this contest, I PLAY IT NONSTOP. Staking out houses and trying to perfect my house is a complete addiction to me. I am still devastated each time I die and vow to NEVER play the game again but then within 10-15 minutes I rob someone and vow to MAKE THE BEST HOUSE EVER. smile It breaks my heart but reels me back in almost instantaneously.

I think ultimately though that Castle Doctrine has one of the biggest, yet most rewarding, learning curves of any game I have ever played. There are constantly new ideas that are coming about within the community and then improved upon, I am always seeing other people make new traps that make my brain sweat. It's crazy, its addicting, its heartbreaking and its original. This contest was a great way to be a part of a community for one of my top 5 games of the year and helped to send it off for a great Steam release. I hope others had as much fun being a part of this game during its testing stages as I did and I just want to say "Thanks" to Jason for his work and dedication to this game and this community over the last year!

Hi All,

I just downloaded the newest version after getting Jason's last email about Steam and such. I played a bit yesterday and just tried logging in again today. Someone stole all my stuff so I am trying to Suicide but the game keeps crashing and everytime I log back in I am just in my house like it was. If I try and Suicide again it crashes again.

**UPDATE** although this was continuing to happen I decided to try and edit my house a bit and then try and attempt my house and THEN Suicide and it worked without crashing.

#69 Re: News » Version 8 Released » 2013-06-07 08:26:33

Oh man. I LOVE this idea. I bet people will play the game much differently. Maybe not at first, but eventually having long term worlds like this would be neat.

Cant wait to try out v.6! Thanks for all your hard work tweaking this game and communicating with us all. I am excited to see and learn how to play with the new changes and fixes.

#72 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion for balancing against Bit locks and Magic dances. » 2013-05-22 10:32:05

welcome to the castle doc forums! i think that if you search around on the forums a bit you will see that alot of your suggestions have been addressed and discussed. there are alot of fixes and changes coming in the upcoming v.6 of the game. I would definitely search around on the forums because there is ALOT of discussion about Abandoned Houses, Electric Floors, dogs, etc. There is alot of great explanation by users but also from Jason Rohrer the games creator.

#73 Re: Main Forum » Prevent Broken Impossible Houses » 2013-05-20 07:11:24

I have seen that house NoisySplatter and always thought it was completely impossible. How do you know this is the exact layout though?

#74 Re: Main Forum » Family psychology » 2013-05-18 10:02:17

Although I like the discussion started here, the only problem I see with your original though bey bey is that having your family disappear is kind of a good thing and not a punishment. You can make your house much harder from the first step. Most people would opt to do this and then houses would become even more of a grind.

This is purely just a question I have been meaning to ask.....

When YOUR house is being robbed and you are unable to enter it, if you go rob someone elses house, does the money go directly into your vault and become steal-able or does it stay with you until you are able to get back into your house?
