in the past i had the settings file to 1024x768, and i was presuming it was working as the game always seemed about that size.
but yesterday i got a new monster of a monitor, and now the game seems to be ignoring my settings files and defaulting to 1600x1200
aww go away with everyone having different names..
we wouldn't have infamous villains such as adrian ernest pounds if everyone saw a different list!
also, with 24 hour chills, knowing the name of your other house is not that useful at all.
what is this mentality of throwing away the family?! your partner holds HALF OF YOUR MONEY!
sure back last summer when they did nothing at all, you'd put them at the front door and not even start building until they were dead. but holding 50% of the cash is so amazingly awesome..
the only reason i would purposely have my family exterminated now would be if i were building the ultimate taber house (one step = death)
Steam only counts time that you played on the steam version, so playing the standalone version won't add time.
there was an issue with steam (that might be fixed now, i am not paying that much attention!) where steam would launch some other exe and then the castledoctrine exe, but the first exe would close soon after running and steam would think you'd stopped playing.
was a similar bug like this a while ago. must've missed the shotgun part when fixing it
learning the intricacies and nuances of this game (and holy cow there are a lot!) is.. i think a never ending process. today i saw two new things i had never seen before that made me go 'oooh wow!'
it is great fun when you see someone do something you've had in the planning stages for a while but could never quite figure out how to make it work, because you can then borrow their solution
It just disturbs me, that enough money can make robbery effortless. There should always be the possibility for the robber to fuck it up
many robberies featuring a large arsenal of tools end up with an 'oops' moment, either running out of one tool just before the vault, or accidentally forgetting that sleeping dogs don't like having your boot on their head.
it is great to see those tapes, someone walks in your house tooled to the hilt and then instantly steps on a grid. you wonder what they shouted upon doing that!
and certainly, i like to make these mistakes sometimes.
I would love to see a memo function added to the game, where we can leave a note inside a house we rob that can be read later by the house owner during tape playback. It will be some sort of stress venting for the burglar before his final moment and for the house owner it will be extremely hilarious to read the memo. Also, this way there is more communication in the game (which this game lacks of) other than simply robbing and building defenses.
After a long day at work, I very much anticipated the prospect of watching people's brutal death in my house and the dying messages can only add more to the thrill.
based on some stuff i have already seen on the steam forums.. i think too many of these memos would just be swearing.
unless it follows the dark souls soapstone example (i haven't seen this anywhere else so slap me if this originated elsewhere) where you can choose from a list of phrases.
i was systematically destroying every house i could last night, until my bag mysteriously emptied itself.
my goal was definitely to rid the game of a lot of money. i was waiting a little bit for the 1.2mil house to appear but it never did i was going to just spend a bit of it and then literally dump the rest of it in the street (or paintings!) because FOR SURE that much money in the game makes it very easy for.. well, for someone to go around systematically destroying every house!
it is easy to forget that a $75,000 more often than not (as i found out last night) has $50,000 of that money in tools. that is $100,000 worth of tools instantly in my possession. so while it might look like someone has spent a ridiculous amount of money to come hit you up, they could have very easily just lucked into them
So steam release happens and hackers arrive... This guy knew where my safe was. knew the combo. he even knew what hallway to take to get to my vault... He didnt even take a second to look around the rest of my house! there is luck, but this has got to be cheating...

Guess its time for a new house idea
was this the first time anyone has even been in this house? don't forget that people like to take notes..
I've often been thinking about chain robberies, but I always thought it would not work very well because there were at most just a few houses above 20k$. With the big pool of players we have now, there are lots of 50k to 70k houses, so I had a try this afternoon. Man, once you rob a 50k house, it is just a rollercoaster. Re-invest in tools and brute-force the next neighbour. I think I completely destroyed around 15 houses above 60k in 3 hours (I didn't kill any kid
). My trip ended in Willson's house, at that moment I already had more than 400k$. Somehow I got bored by the repetitive sequence of throwing a brick/putting a ladder/etc. and felt into a pit. It had been mindless robbing and wrecking havoc for the last 3 hours so I was not even sad or irritated by the loss, I just had a big laugh. But I could have continued endlessly if I hadn't tripped.
Well, thematically it can fit: the richer you are, the easier it is to rob others. But, gameplay-wise, this might be an issue. Any thoughts about this? Maybe increase the price of tools when you get richer/have a long life/murdered people? Rich people pay more taxes after all.[Edit] Maybe, this situation will be resolved after more players do these chains, or after the new wave of players get some experience. The value of the houses may come down to normal in the end. I saw many 50/60k houses that were overestimated (meaning, quite easy to solve with a few tools). IMO a very well designed, top house should be worth about 40k$.
indeed, i stole $50,000 in tools and $25,000 cash with a few bricks and water a moment ago. went on to steamroll through five or six more houses and was getting ready for the next one, when somehow all of my tools ended up in my backpack..
went to the security tape screen but wasn't idle for more than a minute, ah well. the mysteries of life
using a tool will allow a house with clock electronics to pass to the next turn
RestlessBear wrote:It is DRM-free and open source but you need to be online to play the game im sure it will get sorted out for you, you just have to give it some time. Im sure Jason is very busy today being that it release day on steam..
If it requires internet to play it, then it's not "DRM-free" or "open source". Because you still need a server staring up your ass to play it.
yes.. you need internet to play an online game.
the source code is available on the download page and there is absolutely no copyright on any of the game content. there is no digital rights management.. as.. yeah, jason is not claiming any rights over the content. it is freely available for all to use as they see fit.
we're lazy like that!
i was thinking about maybe being able to enter a number into the house filter to act as a kind of 'find houses worth $x or less,' or at least some change to scrolling through the neighbourhood list.
clicking that arrow fifty times to get down to the $100 houses is tiring!
just wanted to be sure, since i only found out today that the email address on my account didn't actually... exist. *cough* so yeah i fixed that now
iceman, that isn't quite right!
every house on the list WAS AT ONE TIME possible without any items, however if a house has been successfully robbed, or a member of family killed, it may render it in a state where it absolutely requires items to get any money out of it.
unless the steam launch and the server stuff the night before has delayed it, i think i missed any emails that went out..
just me?
i have no problem logging in via steam. verify file integrity?
i always enter my house off-centre. i always have. i learned this and took note of it a long time ago.
i wonder why you are being put in the middle
ahh! doors! that is what i was seeing the other night. yes yes!
Magic Dances still mystify me. I get that they're supposed to be obscure and hard to figure out, but is there a way around them other than knowing the specific movements?
a lot of bombs/torches/saws/ladders/guns usually gets around them without learning them. or luck. or wire cutters/water/crowbars.
largestherb: why not make a recording from playing back the recordGame files if you wanted people to see them?
oh it isn't the same at all. i began screeching and moving like sonic the hedgehog once i saw the sirens were blaring!
the replays are nice to have, but they lose a lot of the emotion conveyed through how fast you are moving
good day! in the past people have asked, why can't i be the lady? and a fairly long time ago i did some minor sprite switching and tweaking and ever since then i have been running around robbing people in a dress.
with the launch of the game on steam today it seemed like a good idea to revisit my idea a little, add some variety and then share it with the community!
included are four variations of player and partner sprites, as seen above:
masculine player with masculine partner
feminine player with feminine partner
feminine player with masculine partner
masculine player with feminine partner
now whether you want to see these sprite changes as gender role reversal and same gender couples, or simply a ground breaking '91 man who isn't ashamed to go out robbing houses in a dress, despite what the neighbours might whisper, or any other variation of whatever you want to imagine is completely up to you. go nuts!
oh, i should put a download link around here somewhere! https://www.dropbox.com/s/6tlc9bkptxt9c … prites.rar ~ (virus scan)
installation is simply a case of extracting whichever sprite set .rar file into your main castle doctrine directory* and overwriting the files when prompted.
*quick more helpful people, chip in and explain how people who might not know how to do this! i have steam installing into a custom place and have always extracted tcd to my own games folder manually
destroy every single tile of their house.
my monitor has been on default settings since i got it, i used to be able to see a good 4-5 tiles into the shadows very clearly without ramping up the gamma.
i don't know if i was the first person to notice that everyone was seeing things differently, but i think i was the first person to make a thread going 'wait a minute, is this right??' when i noticed that my laptop could barely see one tile inside the shadow.
i noticed last night, my first time playing the game in a good few months (hooray for personal issues), that there seems to be a little bit of a ghost when pets are moving in sync with you behind a layer of wall. for 1 or 2 moves after they have just gone out of view, you can still see a little bit of doggy shadow lingering.
i'll see if i can take some pictures to demonstrate this quickly.
edit: ahh i think i figured it out, it is the dog shadow taking time to fade out, and i just play very quickly and thought it was just per-movement.
and if you can't see the dogge shadow then it is my monitor being super gamma by default again
i like korean
