All the paintings are back... what happened? A testing accident?

From the house list I enjoyed Mitchell very much. Saw that two dogs behind glas and a door before. wink Whose is it?

That's mine, I always do the same thing with slight variations when I find some money but don't have a plan... I just started playing a couple of days ago after a longer break, found a very easy wife with 5k and had to come up with a house...

I just watched the tapes, it definitely looked like a map hack or someone with a very good memory... I thought it was AMWhy.

Yesterday someone robbed me with a ladder but left most of the money and the paintings in a starter house while robbing someone else, so I got it back without any effort. Now it takes much more ladders if you don't know the solution. I will have to build some new traps for players like you.

how can you stop me from having an account on my pc and another one on my phone? if it's ip based i can just use my 3G connection instead of the wi-fi.

Being able to play on the pc (big screen, mouse) and on the phone (check any time) with the same account is a great advantage you would give up if you chose to have two accounts. If there is no way to stop it, it's your choice.

Cullman, what happens if you are logged in on one device and you also log in on another?

Well, you said free to play... The last two ideas weren't exactly what I would call free to play... Limiting lives means the game is free to try, but definitely not free to play, as dying is part of the game, and a very frequent one. And limiting the construction cost is also not free to play the game as intended.

Free to play means for me you can play the game at any level as long as you want without having to pay anything. I like the other ideas for premium content but not these two.

Just a thought on the kids: yes they are near useless, but the game is very well balanced right now. Nobody has found a way to make a very big advantage of having kids (the wife with the shotgun behind the door was the only one I remember, a very neat one, but not game-changing). Who knows what would happen if you alter the balance... I like the idea but I'm not sure it's wise to change any of the well-baanced mechanics of the game.

I liked quite a lot of the FT features, you should read the FT-tread and if possible contact iceman.

an ultimate leap of faith where a player walks into a dog standing on an electric grid and instead of dieing the dog

That was a nice feature in the Fortress Theory, walking into a powered bot that lost power in the same turn... very scary leap of faith indeed!

Every time someone who loves the game quits, it's becoming a bit slower and harder for the rest of us.

Ah cool, so gyuri is John Eric Bishop. I was sad to see people repeatedly bruteforce your house when it is so simple to work out. Surprised you still haven't changed it.

Oh yeah, I always wanted to be a Bishop.

People still die in it in the funnyest ways and it generates enough money to change what I want to change...

How could you gather a 4400 bounty in just a couple of hours?

#12 Re: Main Forum » House just got hacked » 2014-09-26 23:35:36

My house has also been brute forced with just the right amount of tools, my paintings are now on exposition in the Tate Gallery. I've bought all the William Beebes to protect myself ;-)

Yes that's gotta be me. It's fun watching you try.

Okay, for some reason I can't get into Rodriguez.  I still have the chills but it's been 2 hours and 8 minutes since I was last there...

I think the 2 hours count only if the house is on the list, so if he was at home in the meantime or someone else had a long visit, it might take a while longer.

Nice to see you come every 2 hours to my place too. It's the one where the trapdoors aren't always powered the way you'd expect. I went from nothing to about 11k just because of you bringing some expensive tools and dying ;-) but you're already close. You're the only one who knows about the 'key'. I don't know my name yet, i hope you know which house i mean.

I also think while the random name thing is cool, having a fixed name will also help this problem.  When someone has the same name, every life they will quickly get a reputation as someone that map hacks, or dual accounts or whatever.

Have you thought of a combination of random/fixed names? Let's say you get a random surname when you register, and that name will be unique and always stick to you, but every incarnation gets a new random combination of first and middle name. That way you can have vendettas, but it's always clear someone has started a new life.

Hi guys,

although I never officially retired I haven't been playing for the last couple of months. Still, I had an idea of a house in the back of my mind and I even drafted and tested parts of it, but I've never had the time and motivation to finish it. So before TCD ceases to exist, I wanted to share the idea with you and see what solutions you can come up with.

The idea is: the path to the vault is in a straight line from the entrance, so you can solve it by holding the right button down. But of course the house must be built in a way that tells the robber to do everything else but walking right.

Who wants to try and draft a house like that? The vault doesn't have to be in the far right, it's OK if it's just outside the first screen or it might even be visible if you like.

Very nice stuff.

I experienced a noticeable lag (I'd say about 0.3-0.4 seconds) and it's not because I have slow internet: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3537076481

I like all your suggestions except removing the view shifting. That's a very cool feature for unintuitive puzzles, even if it might be an artefact.  I suggest keeping it but making it irrelevant in beginner's realms by setting the house sizes and the view shifting borders so that you always see the same tiles.

More suggestions:

- Make chill times proportional to player numbers. I think in a realm with about 20 players 24 hours are way too much. And of course make chills times lower for easy realms, but I'm sure you have already thought of that.

- Let there be a realm with no money at all, free building (maybe with some restrictions to house elements) and no tools, but very low chill time.

Just a thought: I think what makes Jason's original game so unforgiving (and what might be his artistic theme) is that you build your own house and every house in the game belongs to someone real. If you want to make an interesting game appealing to a large player base, you could get rid of that. It could be a puzzle game with user-generated levels, but the houses you create don't have to be associated with your life as a robber. I know it takes away much of the intensity of the experience, but this could be the solution for at least some of the realms.

The houses you build could exist forever, with each robber getting a new chance with the original design and damage saving only for that particular robber until he finally solves it. If every house has only a small amount of cash (maybe based on it's difficulty), you could still use that money to chain-rob more houses with tools, but it's not the owner's money and available only for robbing. I think this would make dual-account abuse mostly irrelevant.

#23 Re: Main Forum » My brief attempt to disallow tool use as much as possible » 2014-05-21 12:02:14

You should definitely start with a trapdoor instead of an electric floor.

I'm guessing you have to get the chihuahua stuck where he starts out each time, and then somehow he'll let you back across the trapdoors.  I can't see how it works, though

That's right and it's not even that hard. Maybe someone figures it out.
