i would love to see the dog name census..
1. Rex
2. Dog
3. Lassie
4. T-Bone
forgot i could do this too.. scary how much you can see here
see, that dog by the family i cannot see, even though he is really clear here. i guess because he is brown?
so for many years it has been possible to gain an advantage in online games in darkened places by cranking up your gamma/brightness (counter strike.. quake.. umm i am sure many more!), this is nothing new and i guess is really debatable as to whether you consider it cheating or not - it can definitely give you an advantage.. but, the other person can probably do it to.. so is it unfair? hmm.
anyhow, i was playing tcd on the laptop yesterday and i noticed.. i couldn't see in the dark as much as i was used to (specifically, i couldn't see a doggie-trap lurking around the corner that i have been able to see on my PC many times) and it got me to wondering..
i think this screenshot is a good example and i am going to ask everyone to play a little game.. (if you recognise this as your house, don't worry, your house doesn't look like this any more )
the game.. recreate on castledraft what you can see in this picture as if you were playing the game. if you jump up and down tilting the monitor, go for it. i am just curious as to what others experience. i will draw what i can see on my main pc monitor as well as the little laptop display~
it is quite extreme.. here is my PC http://castledraft.com/editor/b7H8kp
and here is my laptop.. http://castledraft.com/editor/DQzwdE - with a LOT of squinting!
i will definitely point out that i do not have any crazy brightness settings on my monitor, it is an .. ASUS M-something 220 bought many moons ago. brightness is the same level as when i first turned it on, windows brightness is just whatever it defaults to. i do run f.lux but it is 2pm and nowhere near sunset, so that shouldn't be affecting anything - regular daylight setting right now.
this is just curiosity on my part, something i never really thought about until i opened the game on my laptop and was looking at a trap i already knew.. but i am shocked at the difference.. changes how you play quite a bit when vision is so limited!
if you have no house and are just robbing, right now it seems to be
pick first house on list, have a peek. buy tools and have a deeper peek. got the vault? yay we learned something hopefully! did you steal $2000 or more? go to next house. did you steal less than $2000? suicide and go to next house.
next house, same deal.
it seems obvious when you look back at it, but yes indeed i used to visit a few houses before deciding one to rob, then being annoyed by chills. oops.
crowbar window was already full enough
corrections, etc. welcome
I think this would be a really sad day for TCD. Because it would completely change the dynamic of the game. You're no longer hurting a real person when you rob. You're just playing a game with no consequences.
to me the anonymity part makes it feel like that anyway. very few people who have popped into my house appear on the neighbourhood list. there used to be a lot of revenge kind of stuff a long time ago.. i haven't felt that in a fair while. sometimes someone i rob will come and look in my house, but it is rarely more than the 3-step shuffle.
how about players have the option to 'buy' old houses? have you ever tried to enter a house and seen 'this house has been repossessed by the government' or whatever it is, what if the government was selling these old houses at a reduced rate to people?
maybe it is similar to painting sales, where each design is displayed with the original value, and over time that price tag drops. although you'd have to have a limit because $2000 for a house that originally cost $100,000 might be a bit too much.... although.. if the person who bought it can't figure out the self-test maybe it'd be okay.. ah, i dunno.
I can't stress it enough and I don't understand how you think you can balance a game with only 10 maximum players. It's not possible at the moment. It seems to end up with 2-3 guys on top tier everyone else left to the wolves. Can you make computer generated houses to help support the low level of players?
npc houses (whether just randomly pulled up deceased player houses or procedurally generated) i do feel would not be a terrible thing while we still struggle with player numbers
lack of self-test for family means i just put a grid to execute my partner and a powered door/trapdoor in a horrible 'this is simply a game mechanic i am going to exploit, these pixels are nothing more to me than that' kind of way
i already hold my family with a fair amount of contempt. they currently earn too much money to just discard. where is the divorce+alimony options
a familiar sight in the neighbourhood lately. the entry-hall in my house looks quite similar, but it seems to be the only way to keep people out long enough to gather the riches to build something!
is this a façade? it could be. behind that door the vault could be right there! ... but that vault could be empty, leaving me trapped.. just look at that row of concrete, reinforced with steel and then at least one layer of wood. you know what.. i might just turn around and go home. even if i did have a gun to shoot that dog and explore up, there would just be another dog that i can't pass, right? i'll just go home and have a cup of tea.
and it seems that is what almost everyone is doing. http://i.imgur.com/rg03q9N.png
one brave person dived in and soon found themselves reaching for their shoe-lace.. a few even came in and just dived right into an open pit, probably having just gone completely mad from seeing yet another identical entry-way!
just for the record there would be no point making a wall out of power supplies, it would not act like a steel wall at all, as it would be providing power constantly to every adjacent tile, unlike a steel wall which could be turned off.
the two maps below are basically identical, one is just going to cost you a lot more for no reason.

http://castledraft.com/editor/G4e9mI
i mean you're welcome to have a wall made of power supplies if you think it looks good, but it isn't going to really benefit you unless you want power coming out of that many tiles for some strange reason
http://castledraft.com/editor/Ui5lX6 yeah i guess it looks kind of fun
With the current pricing, it is impossible to make a sensible house with 2k. I *never* had this behavior before, but the way things are set up, I am starting to basically buy 2k of tools and try my luck at the top ranking house. Usually I die, then I go for the 2nd best, etc until there are no more good houses, so I just quit the game and repeat the process.
are we playing the same version? the starting money is not great for buying tools to go robbing but it is actually not that bad for making a wooden fortress with a few deadly dead-ends!
$5 wood and $400 saw is quite .... awesome
the son will run all the way to the exit and leave if you hide after the initial spotting, but the daughter just moves over and cuddles mummy
http://castledraft.com/editor/Mz5Hjq
if you just pop up above the wooden walls in this house, the son will attempt to escape the house. the daughter will run to the mother.
just found this interesting.
ukuko had an interesting idea earlier, i don't think super game-breaking but you don't know if you don't propose!
so basically, power sources actually taking up a tile, instead of being some kind of.. subterranean sunken generator.. because.. well, seems more realistic to have power coming from a large unit rather than a flat tile.
i think it'd work fine with water breaking it (cheap $100 power cut off, but tile is still an obstacle) and with blowtorch melting it (power off, passable at $800). maybe even adding it as being 'breakable' with a club/crowbar, but still impassable. hm!
very quick mock-up art.. (it'd probably look better with some kind of red alert tesla coil kind of junk coming out of it!)
the neighbourhood is looking a bit more healthy .. looks like this might be helping
locking people out for an hour~ is a bit poop, BUT it is even more poop if you cannot go to sleep for more than two hours to come home and find your house has been obliterated by one person in ten minutes.
i used to finish my self-test, close the game and crack open my recordedgame to nab the code and take a picture for my records. but a few weeks ago i started needing to reopen the game client to get the house code to be printed into the recordedgame. not much of an issue at the time to me, i figured.
so a few moments ago i completed my house, cut a clear route to the exit for testing, tested it twice. seemed to work perfectly, everything that needed to come on came on. sealed up the tunnel, went for the real test... didn't work. *shrug, dead* i'll just look in my recordedgame and see what i did.. nope. last house code in my recordedgame file was last successful test
so! it would be nice to have your house code printed when you die (possibly with dead robber state saved in it so you can see where you died!), just so you know what happened! and also it is nice to not forget how you made your house and don't have to wrack your brains to remember the wiring if it was a particularly tricky setup!
~
adding on to this post, my recordedgames seem to not be saving at all anymore on my macbook? only 2 recordedgame files from 2 days ago
yeah empty vaults are a bit hit and miss. the mechanic before was also not so good, as people would just repeatedly walk to your vault all day every day until you had $0
long have we wanted up trapdoors in edit mode!
also this is unrelated but made me giggle.. http://i.imgur.com/YJu6dpp.jpg clicky click
<snip> ooh i wonder why
i think my slowly-developing house was just the victim of this suicide smashing. i don't mind. there isn't much else to do and vandalising someone's three days of work in 10 minutes for nothing is totally what i have done in the past.
but right now it is kind of.. well. there was only 1 house when i checked earlier.
will be an interesting change to see.
the club looks a bit like a sword to me, i feel like i'm playing the tarantino doctrine watching all these tapes of people coming into my house with two guns and two swords!
josh definitely has a point there, i was lucky enough to have enough money to have three dogges but i didn't twig that others wouldn't be so lucky.
ps. logging in every few hours to spend my money each time in an attempt to build a house slowly! it has come back to this
it's the rockin'est club in town!
oh no they've melted the bloody door! quick, club them
*cries*
can it be a golf club? i hear lots of people keep golf clubs under their bed!
..my dad keeps an axe under his bed.
