Looks like there has been a sudden surge in player activity - 19 active houses!

#27 Re: Main Forum » Sorry Mr Bond, and I concede to Mr Henson. » 2015-07-10 19:20:30

Just robbed Bond (bringing far too many tools as I made an assumption from your post that he had fixed it up).

What killed you?

#28 Re: Main Forum » Sorry Mr Bond, and I concede to Mr Henson. » 2015-07-10 04:54:14

Yeah, I should have attacked Bond earlier myself, I was planning to today only to find him already robbed.

The odd thing was that you, Mr Clark, were still in the neighbourhood with only a small amount of money in your vault. I was wondering where you suddenly got $50,000 worth of tools from. Still, it is always nice to survive a $50k run smile.

And yes, my entrance hall is very much designed to deter people from attempting the dance even if they've had a good look at the mechanics. I might have to shift them around a bit if you think you have it (and I'd be impressed if you actually did figure it out).

This is important as it stops a dual account exploit in which you have one account constantly robbing another respawning account for $2000. With no time limit you can make ridiculous amounts of money in a very short amount of time doing this. With short time limits you can still make a fair amount.

Thanks mala,

Yeah, it has been a while. I'm not sure I'll dedicate enough time to develop any new house designs but it has been fun running an old proven design and dominating the neighbourhood smile.

It looks like you've made a few interesting houses since I've been gone smile. Are you thinking of starting a new house anytime soon?

#31 Re: Main Forum » I've got a few questions... » 2015-07-06 20:48:55

Making it closed source will make it trickier to hack - still a memory hack should be able to get the map after it is decrypted.

I guess with the lag it is playable, I generally play with 'enter' confirmation anyway, though I imagine the EC2 server American based and I'll be getting more lag here in Australia. My concern is more that with a bunch of people playing it could require a lot of CPU power serverside to compute. Some maps had noticeable lag playing them on my not too old laptop and just one player taking up an entire CPU's worth of power could be quite expensive for you.

#32 Re: Main Forum » Warren Leroy Henson » 2015-07-06 19:36:52

Henson here.

Oh, wow... RIP Gordon Aaron Bushnell.

That was one big bounty.

I've actually completed my (very expensive) house and can't think of any ways of spending money to improve it. So I guess the money will just go towards me eventually making $1Million... smile.

Did someone get your wife? Or did you just decide to start afresh? If the latter, why not use your $7000 and remaining dogs and wipe everything else? I guess a new name can be nice.

I could have easily spent the money to take out your wife, and from a self-preservation point of view it was probably the best action, but I have a strict policy on not killing family members.

Once I saw you going for my wife I felt I needed to teach you a lesson, hence killing all those dogs and smashing up your house. And after that I got a bit paranoid about you building up a fortune and coming in with 100 guns.

You seemed to have a remarkable ability to bounce back. Not long after I trashed your house it was repaired and had thousands of dollars in the bank.

Anyway, it has been fun and I can see the need for a new house. I look forward to seeing your new one.

Well, sales show up on steam and so are instant publicity. The free server is quite obscure and there is not likely to be an event that causes a bunch of unknowns to join at once.

The map hack thing is tricky...

Having the house state calculated on the server and sent to the player would be slow and require a lot of server resources per player, though would solve it. Are you thinking about doing this? I have thought of methods of making the electronics a fair bit more efficient if you are, which could save a lot of server time. Still, having to wait for the server every move could be a bit off putting.

Now, if you want the client to calculate the house state instead, then it could be tricky to hide the house from the robber. The biggest issue here is pet movement. I can think of a system to make the electronics more abstract so that what the server sends the house doesn't give much of an idea of the structure of the house but still allows the house to figure out electronics perfectly.

But pets are going to need to know a lot about the structure to move about correctly. And a lot of houses rely on not knowing what pets are doing behind the scenes to work.

One solution to this would be to make pets only move only while visible - I think Jason might have tried this out at one point. This would have a dramatic impact on the game and make magic dances much less easy to construct (though still possible).

Another possibility is a hybrid approach in which pet movement is calculated on the server but electronics are calculated by the client to reduce the server load. This would still have some lag issues for movement though.

#34 Re: Main Forum » I've got a few questions... » 2015-07-05 21:12:57

I think Jason's decision never to go on sale was a mistake given the nature of the game. Sales would allow for regular injections into the player base with the advantage that a whole bunch would come at once, giving the new players more (and easier) houses to rob and so increasing the chances of them sticking around.

#35 Re: Main Forum » You lot still alive? » 2015-07-01 23:02:08

I've been back for a few weeks, decided to rebuild my Mr Price/Mr Williams house and see how long it could last/how much money I could make. I've just completed the (very expensive) house and so far it seems to be doing pretty well.

#36 Re: Main Forum » Pretty sure there are hacks out for this game... or someone has hacked » 2015-07-01 22:40:06

I've been at the top of the list for a few weeks now and I haven't seen any sign of map hacking in my tapes. Possibly the entrance of my house is difficult to figure out even with a map? But I'd say it is more likely that either someone peaked your combination and then timed out, not leaving a full tape or that someone just got lucky (1/256 isn't that low a chance). Do you have any tapes of people suiciding on the welcome mat?

What can also help is to force ignore the house as soon as you rob it - doesn't matter if you broke something or not.

Ok, so it looks like Jason already thought of this - you can get a maximum bounty of $500 an hour by robbing your second account, which is nothing special. This also applies to repeat robbing $0 houses every time the returns - so I imagine a lot of the extreme $0 robbing behaviour seen has been a bit over the top.

There is still the potential to build a large bounty from robbing easy houses and killing easy wives and children. Using bounties from broken houses to feed a main has been a known exploit for a while now (http://thecastledoctrine.net/forums/vie … php?id=513) and I don't see it going away any time soon. The best we can do is label it bad behaviour and make it clear that it is not in the spirit of the game. It isn't a grey area, it is simply cheating.

Thanks! It is still slightly buggy - there was just a blank space after "Your email is:".

Edit: Hmm, looks like it hasn't registered properly - it won't log in.
Also, why isn't SDL.dll packed with the zip? I had to copy it over from TCD.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Fortress Theory Mod - Version 3 » 2014-03-26 16:01:01

I'm having trouble registering, each time I submit I get this PHP error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ',' or ';' in /home/a2912251/public_html/ticketServer/server.php on line 562

Account 3 die at main account for 100000000000000000$ bounty..

Game won.

Wait WUT! That would legitimately work! Now I feel the urge to spend $16 more on this game.

Of course, I won't, but that's crazy...

Well, you could even do it with two, just leave out acc 1, have acc 2 die in 3 and build your dream house.

This one wouldn't be too hard to fix though - Jason could add a bounty timeout every time you rob a place so that you don't get a vault bounty off a house that you robbed within X hours. Perhaps we should email him about this one or do you think he frequents the forums enough now to catch it?

I'm concerned that these kinds of exploits are starting to become a big part of the game and I'm not sure Blip that this shouldn't be "frowned upon". Advantages that are only available to those who have paid more money for another account is starting to become "pay to win" which is not so cool. I don't think there is much single account activity that should be frowned upon though (besides blatant cheating). People will be nasty but that is part of the game. Being nasty does not have to be though, you can play as nice or as nasty as you want. Intentionally exploiting 2 accounts is going too far though in my opinion.

#42 Re: Main Forum » You should be able to return paintings to Auction house » 2014-03-13 00:09:13

I tend to always aim to have 4 paintings that I like to stick on my wall so I don't have to care about the rest. I imagine to newer players who struggle to get even one painting they like this might not be such a good strategy. Still, I like the fact that bad art gives incentives to steal more good art.

#43 Re: Main Forum » Newb questions about clocks » 2014-03-12 22:57:47

No, it will work exactly as you want it - every 8th turn the door will open and the pits will close.

The power will only get through when every bit is off, otherwise it will be blocked by one of the inverted switches. This only happens once every 8 turns. If you'd like it to happen at a different point along the 8 turn cycle you can replace some of the inverted switches with standard voltage switches - any combination will only let power  through once during the 8 turn cycle.

If you still don't understand build it and watch the behaviour of the inverted switches and you should get what I mean.

I guess, but what I mean is I did a test yesterday my house has 2k in it and I did a quick self test and clicked done and then, I tried to go back in my house as fast as I could and 80% of the time I wasn't fast enough and *Someone is robbing you*

And I notice than it was 70% of the time the same guy than was trying.

This is why you should always exit out the front door during self tests until you know the house is done.

To answer the OP:
Yes, it does, just like any other successful robbery.

#48 Re: Main Forum » Newb questions about clocks » 2014-03-09 06:38:39

For the first question - the best way to figure out if something works is to build it and give it a go. You can even run experiments with an established house - just delete large parts and then quit out of the game to reset your house once you've finished.

In this case it won't work - firstly clocks don't work like this. The clock will only send a single substep "pulse" every 8 turns and this isn't enough to cause full power. To turn it into full power you need to use something like a bit storage unit, but this will create continuous power from then on. If you want something to be on every 8 turns  the easiest way is to connect it in such a way that it will power whenever every bit is in a particular state. This can be done by making the bits power voltage and inverted switches that the power must pass through.

Secondly, as electric floors conduct power the door can never be open when they are on. Pit traps would be more useful (though expensive) here.

For the second question - I'd say the clock is as small as you'll get it to achieve this without thinking up a better binary counter bit design than my one.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Rest in Pieces me and this time I think that's it for me... » 2014-03-09 06:18:07

Another thing you can do is take a map shot (by pressing '+') before each self test in a large house. This way you can look over the house to see what went wrong.

Blip wrote:

Lots of saws, wire cutters, and waters, and a few guns. At least five ladders, torches, and explosives. 1 crowbar, just in case of a door trap.

The logic there is that you have the ability to get through most wiring people have set up, which often leads straight to their vault. Once you follow the wiring close to the vault, you usually only need a couple ladders or explosives to get there. If you're unlucky, you might need a crowbar, which you brought just in case. Most of the other stuff is to keep you out of sticky situations and keep you alive.

I've robbed many $40k houses with much less than "five ladders, torches, explosives". It really depends on the house - do a good scouting run first to get an idea of what you are in for. Also I rarely bring more than 5 wire cutters, the only exception is if it is obvious that they have lots of electric floors. Also, as Jabloko says, dog meat are pretty much a must have in any house - guns are too expensive to be your only defence against dogs. Also, guns are not necessary for most houses unless you are intent on taking out the wife.
